Converge Global Business Launches Cyber Resiliency Bundle to Arm Businesses Against Evolving Digital Threats

Manila, Philippines – Businesses across all industries face two key challenges: rapidly evolving cyber threats and the increasing need for optimized, high-performance network connectivity. To help organizations tackle these challenges head-on, Converge Global Business, the corporate and large enterprise unit of leading broadband and technology provider Converge, is proud to introduce the Cyber Resiliency Bundle, a comprehensive solution uniting reliable connectivity and SD-WAN technology.

The Cyber Resiliency Bundle is designed to empower businesses with the secure, reliable, and high-performing connectivity they need to remain resilient in today’s digital-first world. Whether it’s ensuring business continuity during a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack or delivering seamless connectivity for mission-critical operations, this innovative bundle offers businesses an all-in-one solution to meet their growing demands.

“Modern organizations can no longer afford downtime, inadequate performance, or vulnerabilities to cyberattacks,” said Converge Chief Technology Officer Paulo Martin Santos. “With the Cyber Resiliency Bundle, we’re equipping businesses with the tools they need to stay operational, secure, and ahead of the curve, all while simplifying network management.”

The bundle provides a holistic approach to cyber resiliency with three core components:

1. Reliable connectivity: High-speed, uncontended internet ensures consistent performance for critical applications and workflows. This includes Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) for headquarters and cost-effective fiber broadband for branches or Starlink, satellite internet.

2. Software Defined - Wide Area Network (SD-WAN): supports continuous connectivity and fail-over links, more so it provides best-in-class security features such as VPN tunneling between sites, Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), URL & application filtering, data leakage protection, and advanced malware protection, among others.

3. Full turnkey approach: A one-stop shop with a single point of contact that manages the entire process—from solution design and hardware procurement to final implementation.

This Cyber Resiliency Bundle is particularly valuable for industries like finance, healthcare, retail, and e-commerce, where operational continuity and robust cybersecurity are of critical importance. Combining these technologies into one package simplifies implementation for IT decision-makers and delivers undeniable value by addressing multiple network and cybersecurity needs simultaneously.

The launch of the Cyber Resiliency Bundle reflects a growing commitment to helping businesses proactively adapt to an increasingly complex digital landscape. It not only safeguards operations but also provides opportunities for businesses to streamline costs and boost efficiency, making it an integral part of future-ready strategies.

Businesses looking to enhance their cyber resiliency, protect their digital assets, and ensure seamless connectivity are encouraged to explore the Cyber Resiliency Bundle. PLDT Home Accelerates Fiber Growth, Delivers Strong 1H Performance

PLDT Home accelerated its fiber-led growth in the first half of 2025, with fiber-only revenues rising 7% year-on-year to ₱29.5 billion. Fiber now accounts for 97% of Home revenues, underscoring PLDT’s continued transition away from legacy technologies. Overall, Home revenues grew 4% year-on-year to ₱30.4 billion, driven by aggressive fiber expansion, bundled services, and enhanced customer engagement.

“Our growth reflects the increasing demand for high-speed connectivity and value-rich digital experiences,” said John Y. Palanca, SVP and Head of PLDT Home Business. “We’re expanding our fiber footprint while delivering bundled services that meet evolving customer needs.”

In the first half of 2025, PLDT Home sustained its premium ARPU and grew net additions, which highlights the value and strength of its services that drive customers’ continued trust.

The telco added 169,000 new fiber subscribers in H1, tripling last year’s net additions and bringing total connections to 3.53 million.

This growth momentum goes beyond its network expansion, but also about delivering bundled lifestyle services, superior customer care, and personalized digital engagement. Flagship bundles such as Fiber Unli All and Fiber Plus Netflix continue to attract subscribers with their mix of broadband, mobile, and content services. Over 80% of new customers in Q2 opted for higher-value plans priced at ₱1,299 and above, helping drive the industry’s highest average revenue per user (ARPU) at ₱1,485.

Customer service innovations such as faster installations, AI-powered support, and improved repair times have strengthened retention, keeping churn at the industry’s lowest rate, 1.93%.

PLDT Home is also tapping new household segments through Fiber Prepaid, designed for families who prefer the flexibility of prepaid services. Early results show that a disciplined and selective rollout of the prepaid service is gaining traction as ARPU levels have remained healthy, indicating that growth is incremental rather than shifting away from postpaid.

PLDT Home continues to play a critical role in enabling participation in the digital economy. The ongoing expansion of its fiber footprint increases accessibility to high-speed connectivity in more parts of the country. The PLDT Group’s fiber footprint remains the most extensive in the Philippines at around 1.2 million cable kilometers. Homes passed reached 19.01 million in 74 percent of the country’s towns and 91 percent of the total provinces.

Connecting the Unconnected: Eastern Advances Inclusive Education Through Connectivity and Digital Literacy Efforts

Eastern Communications, the Philippines' pioneering telecommunications company and ICT solutions provider, continues to exceed expectations in championing digital equity and inclusive progress through its sustained community and digital literacy efforts. The company's initiatives, led by its digital enablement program, Project Maaasahan, are advancing access to connectivity and digital literacy for underserved communities, ensuring that every Filipino has the tools to thrive in a digital-first world.

Bringing connectivity where it matters

The Philippines continues to face a significant digital divide. According to the World Bank, the access gap in broadband internet between social classes is rapidly expanding, with fixed broadband penetration in the top wealth quintile being significantly higher than in the bottom quintile.

This disparity is further highlighted in a study by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), which shows that while 92% of barangays have access to a cellular signal, only about 12% have access to free Wi-Fi, and about 29% have access to fiber optic cable. These statistics underscore the urgent need for initiatives that directly address connectivity and infrastructure gaps, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA).

Eastern Communications is tackling this challenge head-on with Project Maaasahan, a multi-year initiative in partnership with unconnected.org and the Department of Education (DepEd). The program aims to bring vital internet connectivity to 10 GIDA schools across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Through this initiative, Eastern will provide free internet access and digital literacy programs to students,

teachers, and their communities. To date, 4 out of 10 target sites have been successfully connected, with satellite devices fully functional and official turnovers completed.

“Our mission is to help close the digital divide by connecting the unconnected,” said Jed Estanislao, Chief Marketing and Experience Officer at Eastern Communications. “We believe in the power of connectivity to transform lives. By providing these schools with the right tools, we are not just giving them internet access; we are opening up a world of information and opportunity, and helping to secure a brighter future for our young learners.”

Internet access reaches more learners

The impact is already being felt on the ground, with over 805 students and 30 teaching staff from the connected sites now having access to the internet. Among the first beneficiaries are Panicuason Elementary School in Naga City, San Jose Elementary School in Dipolog City, Namabbalan Integrated School in Tuguegarao City, and Pao-Pao High School in General Santos City.

For Panicuason Elementary School Principal Winnife Urot, Project Maaasahan represents more than just a CSR effort. "This is a partnership with purpose, anchored in love for Filipino learners and belief that education is the greatest equalizer," she said.

In General Santos City, the access to connectivity is a game-changer for Pao-Pao High School's 340 students, many of whom are from indigenous communities and travel up to four hours a day to attend classes.

"Ang dating pangarap lamang na magkaroon ng maayos, mabilis at maaasahang internet connection, ay isa nang katuparan ngayon,"
shared Mr. Dexter Tejedor, Principal of Pao-Pao High School. "Ang Project Maaasahan ay hindi lamang koneksyon sa internet. Ito ay tulay ng pag-asa, pag-unlad, at pagbabago. Patunay ito na kahit nasa tuktok ng bundok, ang kaalaman at oportunidad, ay maaaring umabot sa bawat batang mag-aaral."

(Translation: "What was once just a dream of having a good, fast, and reliable internet connection is now a reality. Project Maaasahan is not just about providing connectivity. It is a bridge of hope, progress, and change. It is proof that even at the top of a mountain, knowledge and opportunity can still reach every student.")

Nurturing the next generation of innovators

Furthering its advocacy for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, Eastern Communications continues to foster digital literacy through its partnerships with organizations like TeamAsia and the Payatas Orione Foundation Inc. (PAOFI).

The company once again collaborated with the My Dream in a Shoebox (MDIAS) program, providing 100 public school student beneficiaries from PAOFI with an immersive visit to The Mind Museum in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. The activity included a Tech Career Talk from Eastern’s own employees to inspire students to pursue opportunities in the technology sector, culminating in the gift-giving of Dream Kits filled with essential learning materials.

With its sustained investments in Project Maaasahan and other education-focused partnerships, Eastern Communications reaffirms its belief that education is the greatest equalizer. By delivering both “High Tech” solutions and a “High Touch” approach, the company remains committed to building a digitally empowered Philippines where every learner has the chance to connect, learn, and succeed.

To learn more about Eastern Communications and its commitment to social responsibility, please call 5300-7000 or visit www.eastern.com.ph. For more information on how to support the My Dream in a Shoebox initiative, visit www.shoeboxcampaign.teamasia.com.

Vitro Inc Posts Record-Breaking 36% Growth in Colocation Revenues

VITRO Inc., the data center arm of the PLDT Group and a wholly-owned subsidiary of ePLDT, has recorded its strongest performance to date in its colocation business, posting a 36% year-on-year increase in revenues in the first half of the year. This record-breaking growth was fueled by rising demand from financial institutions, the public sector, and global hyperscalers.

Colocation remains the cornerstone of VITRO’s data center growth and operations, directly impacting utilization rates and shaping the company’s expansion roadmap. The surge in colocation also drives growth in VITRO’s connectivity business, reinforcing its role as a critical enabler of digital transformation in the Philippines.

“We are building strong momentum in our data center business, with VITRO Santa Rosa (VSR) driving sustained demand from enterprises and hyperscalers. We’re growing our colocation business not just on VSR but also across all VITRO data center sites,” said Victor S. Genuino, President and CEO of ePLDT and VITRO Inc.

“To sustain this growth, we look forward to stronger data localization policies that will safeguard government data, accelerate cloud and AI adoption, and create even greater demand for the local data center industry,” Genuino added.

Designed to meet the evolving needs of AI workloads and hyperscale deployments, VSR has a total power capacity of 50MW. With Rated-3 certification and Rated-4 readiness, VSR provides unparalleled network diversity and resilience, as it is fully connected to other VITRO flagship sites, the country’s domestic fiber optic network, and international subsea cable systems.

VSR also houses ePLDT’s GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS), designed for enterprises that face infrastructure gaps due to high-compute workloads. With it, enterprises gain the ability to run highly demanding AI workloads on NVIDIA-powered GPU infrastructure, such as machine learning, large-scale data analytics, financial modeling, high-resolution rendering, and advanced simulations with speed, precision, and scalability without the need for massive infrastructure investment.

With the sustained adoption and evolution of AI, VITRO continues to build ahead of demand. The company is in the planning stage for its 12th data center and has already identified key sites for expansion, further cementing its leadership in the Philippine data center landscape.

PLDT Group’s continued investment in data centers and international connectivity supports its broader mission to bridge the digital divide and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

GCash, Western Union Expand Global ‘Cash In’ to Over 200 Markets to Serve More Filipinos Globally

The Philippines’ leading finance super app, GCash, is expanding its global ‘cash in’ feature through a strategic partnership with Western Union, one of the world’s most trusted international money transfer providers, with a global financial network spanning over 200 countries and territories worldwide.

Filipinos living and working overseas may ‘cash in’ (send money) to GCash e-wallet accounts through the Western Union App, website, or through a network of hundreds of thousands of retail locations worldwide. Additionally, they can also send funds to their families and friends with GCash accounts. Once completed, funds are credited instantly to the GCash wallet and can be used immediately for essentials such as groceries, bills, online shopping, savings, insurance, or even investments. Customers can now send up to PHP 500,000 per transaction.

“At GCash, we remain committed to driving financial empowerment for all Filipinos, wherever they are in the world,” said GCash International general manager Paul Albano. “This collaboration with Western Union enables fast, secure, and reliable remittances, ensuring that the hard-earned money of OFWs reaches their families swiftly and safely.”

Western Union’s global scale now connects with the extensive local cashless ecosystem of GCash—the largest in the country. GCash users in the Philippines benefit from over 339,000 cash-in and cash-out outlets, 5.2 million QR-accepting merchants, and more than 520 partner brands on the GLife platform.

Gregory Laurent, regional vice president, Philippines, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands for Western Union, said, “Our partnership with GCash, one the the Philippines’ most respected financial services brands, enables us to stay true to our purpose of serving the aspiring populations of the world with accessible, easy-to-use services, particularly in the digital space. It is yet another mark of the importance we place on the Philippines and consumers in the country, as well as the Filipino diaspora abroad.”

For millions of OFWs, this integration removes long-standing friction in the remittance process and strengthens their ability to support their families from afar. GCash continues to evolve from a money transfer platform into a holistic digital finance hub that serves the needs of Filipinos, wherever they may be.

According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), personal remittances from OFWs reached USD 38 billion in 2024, an all-time high and accounting for over 8% of the country’s GDP.

“While digital adoption is accelerating, a significant portion of these remittances is still routed through over-the-counter channels. The integration of GCash with Western Union provides a digital-first alternative that empowers OFWs and their families to manage money more efficiently, securely, and on their terms,” said Albano.

PLDT, Smart Expand Barangay-Based Campaign vs Cable Theft Nationwide

Building on the momentum of their telco infrastructure protection campaign, PLDT Inc. (PLDT) and its wireless arm Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) are expanding their barangay-based asset protection initiative nationwide, reaching more communities across the Philippines. First launched in Makati City, the initiative has now been rolled out in Pangasinan, Davao, and Cebu, with more areas to follow soon.

Spearheaded by PLDT Group’s Asset Protection and Security Risk Governance (APSRG) Group, in partnership with local government units and police, the initiative is part of the telco leader’s broader response to persistent theft and vandalism targeting its network. In 2024 alone, nearly 1,000 loss incidents were recorded, mostly involving copper cables, which made up 91% of the total cost of material losses. In certain areas in Manila, theft occurs as often as every three days.

But worse than material losses, such attacks also affect customers by disrupting services, leading to complaints and revenue loss. As such, the program aims to not just deter theft and vandalism but also empower residents with tools and knowledge to protect their communities, both physically and digitally.

“Protecting telco infrastructure is not just about keeping the network running; it’s about enabling progress,” said Butch G. Jimenez, PLDT Chief Operating Officer. “When we secure our infrastructure, we help keep schools connected, livelihoods moving, and local economies growing. This initiative is part of our larger commitment to digital inclusion and nation-building.”

Leo A. Gonzales, Vice President and Head of Property, Facilities, and Asset Resiliency Management at PLDT and Smart, underscored the importance of working with barangays for this endeavor: “Nationwide grassroots collaboration plays a critical role in jointly protecting our network assets. By working closely with barangays across the nation, we are reinforcing our ability to safeguard the network on the ground and ensure service continuity for the communities we serve.”

“Local partnerships are vital in enhancing our on-the-ground response to threats against our towers, network equipment, and fiber lines, to name a few. These collaborations not only deter theft and vandalism but also empower communities to take an active role in protecting the services they rely on every day,” said Col. Wilfredo F. Gonio, Head of PLDT and Smart’s Security Central Command & Administration Center, APSRG. "We look forward to working with more barangays to achieve this common goal."

Nationwide rollout: Dagupan, Davao, Cebu

In Dagupan City, the rollout was led by APSRG North Luzon Asset Protection Division (NLAPD), through its head Jose Rainier Mendoza, in coordination with Brgy Mayombo barangay captain Arsenio “Armie” Curameng and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Dagupan.

Meanwhile, in Davao City, the initiative was rolled out in Barangay Baliok, led by Jose Carlos G. Oliver, Head of the Asset Protection Operations Center (APOC), and Nepthali S. Cabanos, Head of Mindanao Asset Protection, alongside teams from Mindanao Relations, PLDT Home Sales, and Smart Device Partners.

In Cebu, over 100 people joined the campaign led by Nicomedes Juezan, Jr., APSRG Visayas Head, in cooperation with Brgy San Vicente, Liloan, and barangay captain Victor Comendador.

Participants — barangay officials, security personnel, and residents — learned how to report incidents via PLDT Security Hotline 164, the basics of the Anti-Fencing Law, and digital safety through PLDT and Smart’s #BeCyberSmart campaign. Real-life scam cases and online threat scenarios were shared to help them better protect themselves, their families, and their communities.

PLDT and Smart also turned over security kits containing flashlights, batons, raincoats, reflective gear, and Smart prepaid cards to support barangay patrol units. Company representatives were on-site to assist residents with connectivity and service-related concerns.

Beyond infrastructure protection, the initiative aligns with the PLDT Group’s broader push for inclusive progress through technology. Ongoing investments in connectivity, digital services, and innovation improve Filipinos’ quality of life by enabling meaningful interactions, wider access to information, and greater digital participation nationwide.

PLDT’s network enhancements also strengthen the capacity and reliability of essential services such as education, healthcare, public safety, and livelihoods, especially in underserved areas. By expanding network coverage and advancing digital education efforts, PLDT and Smart help build stronger, more resilient communities, supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

Don’t Get Duped: Smart Warns Against Fake Links in Scam Texts

Smart warns customers against tapping and opening links embedded in text messages, even if these appear to come from the telco. The mobile services provider stressed that it only uses the full address of its official domain – https://smart.com.ph – in text blasts.

For SIM registration, Smart sends the official link https://smart.com.ph/SimReg only to unregistered numbers. Customers are reminded that registered SIMs don’t need to register again.

“Smart has stopped using shortened links for its official domain or SIM registration site,” said Atty. Roy Ibay, VP and Head of Regulatory Affairs at Smart. “Only smart.com.ph is legitimate, and any other version is fraudulent and designed to trick customers into giving away personal information.”

Smart has intensified efforts against text scams. It has blacklisted more than 369,000 mobile numbers involved in phishing activities from January to July 2025. It has also prevented more than 1.7 billion scam texts from reaching customers in the same seven-month period.

“We urge everyone to be extra vigilant, avoid opening suspicious links, and immediately report these attempts through our official channels so we can act against scammers,” urged Atty. Ibay.

Customers may report suspicious messages to Smart’s HuliSCAM portal at https://smart.com.ph/huliscam. They may also call the hotline of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) at 1326. Customers may also file a complaint with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) at www.ntc.gov.ph or report scams through its consumer hotline at 1682.

Other than the HuliScam portal, customers may also report cyber threats to Smart’s verified and official social media pages – Smart Communications on Facebook and @SmartCares on X — or call hotline *888.

PLDT to Fire Up the First Three Google Laser Sites in the Philippines

PLDT Inc. is set to activate the Philippines’ first three Google Taara laser communication sites, bringing breakthrough technology that delivers fiber-like connectivity without the need for undersea or underground cables.

Developed by Google’s X Moonshot Factory, Taara uses beams of light to transmit data across long distances, similar to fiber optics but without the physical cable. Each site is capable of delivering up to 20 Gbps of capacity—enough to provide high-speed internet for thousands of users.

The first installations are at Talim Island in Rizal, Dipaluda in Isabela, and Bagong Pag-asa QC. On Talim Island, the technology spans an 11.8-kilometer stretch across Laguna de Bay, linking the island to the mainland. In Dipaluda, Isabela, the Taara system covers 13 kilometers of mountainous terrain where rolling out fiber is costly and logistically challenging. In Bagong Pag-asa QC, the Taara system will be used to provide an alternative route and resolve single point of failure (SPOF) issues.

“This is a game-changer for us in connecting remote areas,” said Butch Jimenez, PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Head of Network. “It makes it easier to provide fiber-like internet to new areas. And we’re excited for the people of Talim Island and Dipaluda to enjoy the benefits of FTTH connectivity.”

“We’ve evaluated this technology for over a year,” added Erick Santiago, PLDT-Smart Head of Network Strategy. “We’re proud of our Network team, who made it possible for us to launch this while others are just announcing their testing phase.”

Beyond speed, Taara also presents significant cost savings compared to traditional infrastructure. For Talim Island, deploying Taara avoids the high expense of laying fiber optic cables underwater, while in Dipaluda it bypasses the challenges of installing fiber across rivers and mountains.

These sites mark the start of PLDT’s larger plan to explore laser-based connectivity as a complement to its nationwide fiber network, especially in hard-to-reach areas such as islands, lakesides, and rugged inland communities.

With Taara, PLDT strengthens its leadership in digital inclusion, ensuring that more Filipinos—even in the most remote areas—can access reliable, high-speed internet.

Smart to Double Users’ Upload Speed in Iloilo With 5G Standalone Tech

Mobile services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), the wireless subsidiary of leading integrated telco network PLDT Inc. (PLDT), has fired up its 5G Standalone network in Iloilo City, bringing next-level amazing digital experiences to subscribers in the area.

"This is not just a pilot, it's a full-blown launch of the latest tech. And we're glad we're doing it in Iloilo,” said Anastacio "Boy" R. Martirez, Chief Operating Officer at Smart. “I grew up in West Visayas, and I wanted this region to be one of the first to feel the full power of 5G Standalone. We're excited for our customers here to feel what the future of connectivity looks like--unparalleled upload speeds, low latency gaming, and seamless streaming.”

As the inaugural site for Smart’s latest network innovation, Iloilo marks the beginning of a broader rollout that will soon extend to more locations nationwide.

With Smart’s enhanced network capabilities, subscribers in Iloilo can now enjoy seamless, reliable connectivity with significantly lower latency--perfect for lag-free gaming, glitch-free live selling, or buffer-free streaming, ensuring leveled-up digital experiences for Ilonggos and tourists.

“As a center of growth, talent, industry, and innovation, the city deserves a network that can keep up with its ambitions. Smart’s enhanced infrastructure is built to support the city's momentum, enabling entrepreneurs, creators, and communities to thrive in a fully connected digital future,” Martirez added. “I encourage Ilonggos to get a 5G phone soon to fully experience the full power of True 5G.”

Smart is also working closely with partner smartphone vendors to make available more devices compatible with its upgraded network in the market, ensuring more subscribers can experience the benefits of next-level connectivity.

Beyond speed

Beyond speed and latency, Smart’s next-generation network is designed to deliver seamless connectivity, ensuring subscribers stay connected without interruptions, regardless of their activity or location. This foundation also enables Smart to develop advanced capabilities such as network slicing, which lets Smart dedicate bandwidth for specific tasks, so gamers can enjoy uninterrupted play while businesses run mission-critical apps smoothly. PLDT Paves Way for Smarter, AI-Driven Future

The PLDT group is pushing forward in its digital transformation journey, with artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and infrastructure development to reshape the future of telecommunications. This direction was spotlighted at the recent P&A Grant Thornton Economic and Industry Forum, entitled “P&Anorama: 2026 Economic Outlook and Industry Shifts Unpacked”, where PLDT and Smart Vice President for IT Intelligent Automation Technologies, Branden Dean, discussed how AI is changing the way telcos connect with customers and improve operations. As Dean emphasized, connectivity today goes beyond access—it is about intelligence, agility, and personalization.

Speaking before business leaders and subject matter experts during a panel discussion on opportunities, trends, challenges, and concepts around digital innovation, Dean shared how the PLDT group leverages AI to understand customer behavior, deliver hyper-personalized services, and take proactive action—from predictive analytics that anticipate network issues to AI-powered virtual agents that elevate customer care. Inside the organization, tools like robotic process automation (RPA) platforms are streamlining workflows, reducing costs, and improving efficiency. While the opportunities are significant, he also acknowledged that challenges remain, including legacy systems, cybersecurity threats, and the need to strengthen digital adoption and upskill talent.

To support its AI ambitions, PLDT recently unveiled the country’s first AI-ready hyperscale data center, VITRO Santa Rosa (VSR), built specifically for AI workloads. Located in Laguna’s fast-growing tech corridor, VSR is built by VITRO Inc., a subsidiary of ePLDT and the data center arm of PLDT. As the PLDT Group continues to evolve, it remains focused on creating real value—not only for its customers and enterprise partners, but also for the communities it serves and the future it helps shape.

Every Filipino Should Be a ‘Co-Creator’ in the AI Revolution - Smart COO

With over 250,000 businesses in the Philippines now actively using artificial intelligence (AI), the country is seeing one of the fastest adoption rates in the region — growing 50% year-on-year. Yet amid this rapid uptake, leaders are reminded that nothing beats human instinct when it comes to decision-making.

This was the core message of the keynote delivered by Anastacio “Boy” R. Martirez, Chief Operating Officer of Smart Communications Inc. (Smart), during the first Philippine AWS Cloud Day held in Taguig City.

“[Generative] AI can process, create, predict, and personalize. But it cannot choose the path — that’s up to us as a people, as a government, as companies. We must steer it, guided by human instinct. And like I said [at the Mobile World Congress] in Barcelona early this year, it’s really the CEO’s instinct that must guide our decisions…not AI,” Martirez said.

Speaking before hundreds of industry participants, Martirez spotlighted Smart’s commitment to affordable, high-quality innovation — using AI to enhance customer service, optimize networks, and deliver targeted marketing. These efforts are already driving measurable impact, with AI adopters in the Philippines reporting an average 18% revenue growth and 70% seeing significant productivity gains.

However, Martirez emphasized that technology alone is not enough. With 57% of businesses citing a lack of digital skills as a barrier to AI adoption, he called for a national AI literacy drive to empower Filipino talent.

"True innovation lifts everyone… [but] tech without skills is useless. We need a national AI literacy drive so that everyone, from BPO agents to barangay health workers, can use AI,” Martirez said. “Work once out of reach due to training, distance, or cultural barriers is now within grasp, unlocked by gen AI and world-class connectivity.”

Smart’s partnership with AWS is central to this transformation. Together, the companies are building a 'Center of Excellence' for AI in the Philippines, ramping up Smart’s data and AI capabilities to deliver personalized, AI-powered customer experiences.

“The best AI innovations are built with purpose, born with empathy, scaled with trust,” Martirez said. “Together, we are reimagining journeys, supporting digitalization, and expanding digital inclusion.”

Positioning Smart as the nation’s digital backbone, Martirez shared Smart’s vision for AI in the Philippines: “We aim to make every Filipino a co-creator in the AI revolution. We are at a fork in the road. AI could widen the digital divide or make the Philippines the world’s lab for inclusive AI. We choose the latter.”

PLDT and Smart’s continued investments in AI and network infrastructure align with their mission to bridge the digital divide, expand access to technology, and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — particularly SDG No. 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. These efforts reflect the PLDT Group’s broader commitment to nation-building through technology and support the national government’s digitalization agenda.
