Globe, KDDI Partner to Explore Growth Opportunities in Mobile and Transform Retail Experience in the Philippines

Globe has entered into a strategic partnership with KDDI Corporation, one of Japan’s leading telecommunications and digital services companies, to explore new growth opportunities in mobile services and retail experience transformation in the Philippines.

The partnership marks a new chapter in Globe’s customer experience journey. Two years after rationalizing parts of its physical retail footprint as more customers shifted to digital channels, Globe is now looking ahead: not simply to reopen or expand stores, but to reinvent what the retail experience can become in a more digital, connected, and customer-led era.

"Globe has always believed that growth goes hand in hand with elevating our overall customer experience philosophy,” said Carl Cruz, President and CEO of Globe. “This strategic partnership with KDDI allows us to learn from one of the world’s most advanced telco and digital ecosystems, while bringing Globe’s deep understanding of the Filipino customer to the table. Together, we aim to explore new ways to make mobile services more relevant, retail experiences more seamless, and digital solutions more responsive to the evolving needs of Filipinos. As we look toward 2027 and beyond, our goal is to create value that goes beyond connectivity and helps build a stronger, more inclusive digital ecosystem for the country."

Through the collaboration, Globe and KDDI will explore how KDDI’s experience in Japan, including recurring revenue models that connect telecommunications with financial, entertainment, lifestyle, and other digital services, can complement Globe’s scale, market reach, and established customer relationships across its broad mobile base of approximately 67 million customers.

As an initial step, Globe and KDDI are jointly exploring an initiative to expand Globe’s retail footprint and innovate on its retail experience. The effort seeks to reimagine how stores can serve customers in a market where digital adoption continues to accelerate, but where human connection, guidance, and trusted support remain essential.

For Globe, the partnership is disruptive as it transforms ways for customers to experience the brand and build a digital ecosystem that delivers greater value, convenience, and care. This direction aligns with the company’s broader brand repositioning as a company focused not only on connectivity, but on creating more meaningful, integrated, and empowering experiences for customers.

Globe Equips Government Agencies to Detect and Disrupt Mobile Scams

Building on its recent collaboration with government agencies to strengthen mobile security, Globe conducted a technical deep dive session to equip authorities with the skills needed to operationalize IMSI Catcher Detectors to enhance efforts against mobile-based scams.

Following the turnover of IMSI Catcher Detectors last March, Globe continues to support government partners by strengthening their capability to use these tools in real-world enforcement. The session gathered representatives from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), the Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for a hands-on learning experience.

The technical walkthrough was led by Dr. Altaf Shaik, a globally recognized expert in cellular and next-generation network security from Technische Universität Berlin. He shared insights on how these threats exploit vulnerabilities in mobile networks, along with practical approaches to detecting and mitigating them.

“This is no longer just about having the tools,” said Atty. Froi Castelo, Globe Group General Counsel. “What matters is how effectively they are used, and that requires stronger coordination and a shared understanding of the threat landscape.”

For Globe, strengthening mobile security means working closely with partners to improve both systems and response. The company continues to support efforts that enable faster detection, clearer visibility of threats, and more coordinated enforcement actions.

“Detection is one part of it, but what really matters is what happens after,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe Chief AI and Data Officer and Chief Information Security Officer. “If we can help teams better identify the source of these rogue signals and act on them faster, that’s where you start to see real impact.”

The training also emphasized the importance of coordination across agencies, where information sharing and aligned response can significantly improve outcomes. This kind of collaboration allows teams on the ground to move faster and stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated threats.

As mobile connectivity continues to shape how Filipinos live and work, efforts like this help ensure that the systems behind it remain secure and reliable. Globe and its partners remain committed to strengthening the country’s digital defenses and protecting users from evolving mobile-based risks.

Smart Partners With Lynk Global to Extend Mobile Connectivity via Satellite Starting With SMS

PLDT Head of Network: "When it’s fully rolled out, we think this will transform rural and remote connectivity in the Philippines."

Smart Communications has teamed up with Lynk Global to make mobile communications possible even in areas without signal. The service will use satellites to directly connect to ordinary mobile phones (Direct to Device, or D2D), initially allowing people to send and receive SMS messages and use mobile applications (WhatsApp) even when cell services are unavailable. When the Lynk satellite D2D network is fully rolled out in the next few years, full mobile voice and data connectivity will be available.

The partnership will begin, as the Lynk network deploys, with basic text messaging and mobile applications over LTE, which can help keep communities connected and safe in current out-of-coverage locations as well as during typhoons, earthquakes, and other emergencies.

“This isn't a simple technology play for us,” said Menardo G. Jimenez, PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Head of Network. “We think this will transform lives.”

“We're trying to be there for all Filipinos,” he continued. “Whether they're talking to family abroad, or standing on a rooftop during a flood, requesting assistance. This partnership represents the very core of our purpose as a telco: to improve the lives of Filipinos no matter where they are across the Philippines.”

“To make this happen, Smart and Lynk will run lab tests, set up roaming connections, and conduct field trials before a phased rollout,” explained Radames Zalameda, Head of the Network Strategy and Transformation Office at Smart. “We will begin by linking our core systems and move toward live field testing, using Smart’s spectrum to reach farther areas and prioritizing coastal and mountain barangays and key maritime routes while ensuring that connections are secure, reliable, and stable.”

“We are more than excited to work with Smart to deliver reliable satellite connectivity directly to mobile phones in the Philippines,” said James Alderdice, Lynk Global Vice President for Asia Pacific. “Lynk’s technology is designed to extend mobile coverage everywhere, supporting Smart’s mission to keep communities connected, even when disasters strike.”

Through this partnership, Smart will add a new, disaster-resilient layer to the nation’s mobile network, one that can keep communities connected even when traditional infrastructure is disrupted. This initiative not only advances inclusive connectivity but also reinforces the Philippines’ capacity to respond and recover faster during emergencies, strengthening the network’s reliability for the long term.

Smart’s push to lead in next-generation technologies reflects the PLDT Group’s broader commitment to building a safer, more connected, and more resilient digital nation. These efforts, anchored on innovation and public service, support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and advance the Group’s contribution to the national digital agenda and the country’s overall disaster preparedness and resilience framework.

Mobile Users Consume More Data in Q1 as Demand for Connectivity Soars

Globe has observed a sustained uptrend in demand for mobile data, as it logged 1,610 petabytes of mobile data traffic in the first quarter of 2024, a 19% increase from the same period last year at 1,352.

The average mobile data consumption per user has also seen a sharp hike, surging by 24% to an average of 15.6 GB per month. This increase is indicative of the growing engagement and reliance on mobile data among consumers, as digital content consumption and online activities continue to rise.

This drove the growth of Globe’s mobile data revenues by 10% in the first three months of the year, reaching Php 23.8 billion, up from Php 21.7 billion in the same period last year.

This significant growth is largely propelled by the widespread adoption of smartphones and the burgeoning popularity of data-intensive applications, Globe said.

“Our commitment to enhancing our network capabilities and expanding our services to meet the evolving needs of our customers is evident in these results. As mobile data becomes a more predominant part of our revenue stream, we are more determined than ever to invest in state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure to provide our customers with an unparalleled digital experience,” said Darius Delgado, Head of Globe Consumer Mobile Business.

As digital platforms become increasingly embedded in the day-to-day lives of consumers, mobile data usage has grown exponentially.  Mobile data now accounts for 82% of Globe's total mobile revenues, up from 80% last year.

In contrast, traditional mobile services such as voice and SMS have seen slight declines of 2% and 3% year-on-year, respectively, with revenues dipping to Php 3.4 billion and Php 1.9 billion. This shift underscores a broader trend in consumer preference toward data-driven communication over conventional voice calls and text messaging.

On a sequential basis, mobile data revenues remained stable against the fourth quarter of 2023, which is typically a strong period for data consumption due to the holiday season, demonstrating the strong, sustained demand for mobile internet services among Filipinos.

Globe continues to cater to the digital lifestyle of Filipinos, who are increasingly turning to mobile solutions for their communication, entertainment, and shopping needs. The company remains focused on bolstering its mobile data services and maintaining its leadership in a highly competitive market.

The partnership represents Globe Platinum’s commitment to advocacies that matter, support for which can have a positive effect on how we live. This alliance shows the brand’s devotion to providing customers access to a more sustainable lifestyle. It enables them to realize their desire to become a voice of influence within their communities, conveying the importance of making healthier choices and persuading others to try better brands for their daily needs.

In an exclusive sneak peek on April 24, Gogoro Pulse, the world’s first hyperelectric scooter, was unveiled at the Gogoro Experience Center in Greenbelt, Makati City, giving Globe Platinum customers a first glimpse into state-of-the-art Gogoro Smartscooters®.

“At Globe, we are dedicated to providing our customers with access to innovative solutions that enhance lives and contribute to our planet's well-being,” said Ernest Cu, President and CEO of Globe. “We know that our Platinum customers want to be at the forefront, and this partnership with Gogoro allows them to experience cutting-edge electric vehicle technology first-hand through Gogoro Pulse.”

Gogoro is Globe’s debut in climate tech. The company envisions the two-wheel EV to contribute to reducing carbon emissions as more and more gas-fed cars cram Philippine roads. A three-month pilot test among 60 Globe employees last year resulted in 3,316 kg of carbon emissions avoided over a total travel distance of 42,399 km ridden. This amounts to removing harmful CO2 equivalent to consuming roughly 1,412 liters of gasoline, helping curb pollution in the crowded metropolis while also saving on fuel costs as petroleum prices continue to rise.

Bernie Llamzon, President and CEO of Gogoro Philippines said, "We are thrilled to partner with Globe Platinum to bring our innovative electric mobility solutions to their discerning customers. Together, we are paving the way for a sustainable future one ride at a time."

Gogoro Pulse hailed as the world's first Hyper Electric Scooter, is set to transform urban transportation with its innovative features and exceptional performance. Meticulously engineered and crafted for excellence, the Gogoro Pulse showcases significant advancements that rank it among the most sophisticated electric vehicles worldwide.

Other key features are the AeroForce Design Concept that minimizes drag and turbulence, a panoramic 10.25-inch HD touch display powered by cutting-edge Qualcomm technology, the Active Matrix Light for enhanced visibility, and the HyperCore Chip for exceptional computing speed. In addition, its seamless integration with Apple's digital key technology in Apple Wallet elevates convenience to unprecedented heights.

Gogoro Smartscooters® utilizes revolutionary battery-swapping technology, enabling riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones quickly via the GoStation Network. Since debuting in December 2023, Gogoro has established seven GoStations across Metro Manila and continues to expand its battery-swapping network.

Offered in eye-catching White, Silver, and Grey, the Gogoro Pulse Ultra can only be availed through reservation. Prices start at Php450,000, with financing plans to be rolled out soon. Gogoro offers two energy plans: Plan 799, which allows for up to 420 kms per month, and Plan 999, covering up to 700 kms monthly.

As global sustainability awareness continues to grow, consumers are choosing brands that support and produce sustainable products.

With the launch of the Gogoro Pulse, Globe Platinum customers will not just be among the pioneers in adopting the future of mobility, they’ll get to lead a shift toward more sustainable modes of transportation, with a healthier choice that can leave a lasting impact on the road and beyond.
