Built for the Daily Grind: CASIO PH Spotlights All-Weather G-SHOCK Lineup

Manila, Philippines — Philippine weather has been unpredictable lately. A commute that starts in blistering heat can easily end in a sudden downpour, so the watch on your wrist needs to keep up. CASIO Philippines spotlights five G-SHOCK models that balance durability, everyday function, and style for commuters navigating unpredictable weather and busy city routines.

These timepieces are made with the realities of daily transit in mind. With 200-meter water resistance and G-SHOCK’s signature shock-resistant construction, they can handle sudden rain, crowded trains, jeeps or UVs, and the movement that comes with getting around the city. Features like timers, world time, and LED illumination add another layer of everyday practicality—perfect for routines that rarely go as planned.

"Filipino commuters deal with a lot in a single day, whether it’s a sudden downpour or a train car that feels like an oven," said Sena Kuroda, Regional Sales Manager, CASIO Philippines. "G-SHOCK was built for exactly that kind of unpredictability. Commuters shouldn't have to choose between a watch that can keep up and one that looks good doing it."

For commuters leaning into retro street fashion, the GA-140-1A1 (₱8,860) delivers a strong dose of retro character and nostalgia. Inheriting the oversized, rugged case of the original GA-100 line, its dial design nods to the classic boomboxes and portable stereos of the ‘80s and ‘90s. The result is a bold, vintage-influenced look that adds flair to everyday outfits while retaining the toughness G-SHOCK is known for.

For a more commanding look, the GA-700-1A (₱7,920) stands out with its dynamic three-dimensional face and substantial case. Its sculpted hands make the display easier to read at a glance, and a five-year battery keeps maintenance minimal. A dedicated front button also provides quick access to illumination—especially useful during evening commutes or in low-light settings.

Built for the long haul, the GA-010-1A (₱7,770) and GD-010-1 (₱7,960) combine G-SHOCK resilience with a 10-year battery, so you don’t have to worry about frequent battery changes. Both are made with bio-based resin and finished in versatile black colorways that work easily from transit to the office. A prominent front button activates a high-brightness LED, while the choice between the two largely comes down to display preference: the GA-010-1A features a textured analog-digital dial, while the GD-010-1 offers a large, high-contrast digital display for quick readability on the move.

Rounding out the lineup is the GA-100-1A1 (₱8,870), which pairs a blacked-out aesthetic with the rugged design language long associated with G-SHOCK. It combines four digital displays with aluminum hands for easy readability, while high magnetic resistance shields it from the everyday interference of phones, laptops, and transit turnstiles, exactly the kind of exposure a daily commute brings. Its utilitarian look makes it a solid choice for commuters who appreciate the classic, hard-wearing side of G-SHOCK.

Together, these five models reflect everyday commuters’ priorities—long battery life, quick illumination, easy readability, and personal style. In a city routine shaped by sudden rain, crowded transit, and long days on the move, durability becomes less of a technical feature and more of an everyday necessity.

These models are available at CASIO and G-SHOCK stores nationwide, as well as through the CASIO Philippines online store.

Casio Philippines Brings Quiet Luxury to G-Shock With the New Luxe Black 2100

Manila, PhilippinesCASIO Philippines has dropped the new G-SHOCK Luxe Black 2100, a four-piece collection that brings a quieter, more refined expression of style to one of G-SHOCK’s most recognizable silhouettes. The new series is now available at G-SHOCK stores and authorized dealers nationwide and online through the CASIO G-SHOCK website, Shopee, TikTok, Lazada, and Zalora pages.

The Luxe Black 2100 Series arrives at a time when fashion in the Philippines is moving away from overt displays of status in favor of pieces defined by restraint, versatility, and considered design. That shift is tied to a broader local move toward sustainability-minded design, with Filipino designers and brands placing greater emphasis on longevity, craftsmanship, and quality over disposability. For G-SHOCK, the shift opens up a new way of expressing toughness.

"More than just an aesthetic, quiet luxury is a mindset, and Luxe Black is G-SHOCK's answer to it,” said Sena Kuroda, Regional Sales Manager of the Timepieces Division at CASIO South East Asia. “We're keeping the durability the brand has always been built on, but expressing it through material and finish instead of visual volume. It's a sign of where G-SHOCK is headed: toughness that can flex with how people actually want to dress, not just one fixed look.”

A quieter take on the iconic 2100

At the center of the Luxe Black 2100 Series is the idea that toughness does not always have to be loud.

G-SHOCK has long been recognized for bold and unmistakably rugged designs. Luxe Black keeps that foundation intact, but pares back the visual volume. Matte black dials, minimized reflection, redesigned hands and indexes, and carefully placed metallic elements create a watch whose details are meant to reveal themselves gradually rather than command attention immediately.

It is a more restrained interpretation of the familiar 2100 silhouette, shaped by the same thinking that has driven the broader interest in understated luxury: confidence expressed through precision, material, and finish instead of excess.

For the modern tastemaker, that translates to a G-SHOCK that sits more naturally within a considered wardrobe. Its monochromatic treatment allows the watch to move between casual everyday dressing and more polished looks while retaining the durability and function that define the brand.

Four interpretations of Luxe Black

The collection includes four models across the GM-2100LXB and GA-2100LXB lines.

The GM-2100LXB-1A (₱17,010) and GM-2100LXB-1A9 (₱15,710) feature a hairline-finished metal bezel with black ion plating, paired with a newly designed matte black dial. Silver- or gold-toned accents provide understated contrast, while redesigned hands and indexes add a more refined finish to the familiar octagonal 2100 silhouette.

For a lighter everyday option, the GA-2100LXB-1A (₱9,430) and GA-2100LXB-1A9 (₱9,430) feature a matte-finished octagonal bezel and band with a redesigned matte black dial. Metallic vapor-deposited indexes introduce subtle depth, while the lightweight resin construction keeps the watches easy to incorporate into everyday wardrobes.

Both the GM-2100LXB and GA-2100LXB models retain the core performance features associated with G-SHOCK, including shock resistance, 20-bar water resistance, stopwatch and timer functions, world time across 48 cities, the Hand Shift feature, double LED Super Illuminator lighting, and up to five daily alarms.

That same shift toward sustainability-minded design carries into the materials: the collection incorporates bio-based resin in key bezel and band components, helping reduce environmental impact while preserving G-SHOCK’s signature toughness and reliability.

Quiet strength for the modern tastemaker

Luxe Black reflects a broader shift in how statement pieces are being worn. Rather than relying on obvious branding or visual excess, the collection leans into a more measured kind of presence, where proportion, finish, and versatility do more of the talking.

That approach gives G-SHOCK room to explore a different side of its identity. The toughness remains, but its expression becomes more refined: less about visual aggression and more about restraint, precision, and elevated detailing.

For a brand built on durability, the Luxe Black 2100 shows how G-SHOCK’s definition of strength can shift alongside changing tastes. Rather than departing from the 2100’s established identity, the collection reframes it for a more fashion-conscious moment, where function, restraint, and personal style increasingly overlap.

The G-SHOCK Luxe Black 2100 Series is now available at CASIO and G-SHOCK stores nationwide and through the CASIO Philippines online store.

DOST-PTRI Urges Compliance With PTF Law for Government Uniforms, Citing ₱17.8-Billion Opportunity for Local Textile Industry

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) is stepping up efforts to strengthen compliance with the Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) Law across government agencies, potentially opening a ₱17.8-billion annual market for locally made “Telang Pinoy” uniforms.

The push is part of DOST-PTRI’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the implementation of Republic Act No. 9242, which mandates that government agencies use Philippine Tropical Fabrics—locally sourced and processed natural fiber textiles made from abaca, pineapple, banana, bamboo, cotton, and silk—in official uniforms and government-issued attire. Despite the policy being in place, the institute noted that awareness and procurement gaps persist among some agencies and local government units.

Government data show that the annual Uniform or Clothing Allowance (UCA) for public employees amounts to approximately ₱17.8 billion. Around half of this is estimated to go directly to textile procurement, translating to a demand of roughly 30 million meters of fabric each year at an average cost of ₱300 per meter.

DOST-PTRI Director IV Dr. Julius L. Leaño Jr. said the scale of demand and full compliance with the law present a clear opportunity to activate the entire domestic textile supply chain.

“Government uniform requirements can drive production across the entire value chain—from fiber cultivation to yarn production, weaving, and garment manufacturing,” Dr. Leaño said. “Full compliance with the PTF Law can transform public procurement into a stable market for local producers.”

DOST-PTRI said local fiber supply is sufficient to support increased production when properly integrated into the value chain, citing that cotton farms covering 12,600 hectares can produce about 2,270 metric tons of cotton, while other natural fibers contribute around 1,000 metric tons, forming a domestic raw material base capable of meeting the estimated annual PTF demand.

The institute also underscored the sustainability benefits of shifting to locally produced natural fiber textiles, citing estimates that PTF-based fabrics can reduce carbon emissions compared with conventional polyester materials.

To support implementation, DOST-PTRI continues to provide technical standards, testing, and certification for compliant fabrics. The agency is working closely with partner agencies: the Civil Service Commission (CSC) for compliance enforcement, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for expanding market opportunities for local manufacturers, and the Department of Agriculture–Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (DA-PhilFIDA) for support in fiber cultivation.

Through its Fostering the Revitalization of Nascent Textile Innovation Ecosystems in the Region (FRONTIER) program, DOST-PTRI is establishing textile innovation hubs nationwide. These hubs are designed to connect fiber producers, weavers, designers, and manufacturers to expand and strengthen local textile production capacity within a coordinated ecosystem.

DOST-PTRI is calling on government agencies and industry partners to accelerate full compliance with the PTF Law, framing it as both a legal obligation and a concrete economic opportunity for Filipino farmers, weavers, and manufacturers. The institute continues to advance its “Telang Pinoy” advocacy—its campaign label for government and public adoption of locally made Philippine tropical fabrics—as a platform for sustained demand across the domestic textile value chain.

Make and Mend! Ends Three-Episode Run with a Powerful Message on Sustainable Fashion

The three-part reality lifestyle program Make and Mend! officially concluded its production and airing run, leaving audiences with a renewed perspective on the relationship between sustainability and fashion. In its premiere episode, the show introduced a bold challenge that tasked three designers to create high-fashion runway ensembles using only secondhand materials sourced from local ukay shops. To raise the stakes further, each contestant had to stay within a strict five-hundred-peso budget. Stepping up to the challenge were Aivann Romero of Ateneo de Manila University, Ian Dave Allam of Far Eastern University, and Mary Joanne Ordoña of University of Santo Tomas.

Each designer entered the competition determined to demonstrate that sustainability and high fashion could coexist without compromising artistic vision. The competition went beyond the studio in the second episode, immersing viewers in the realities of Filipino commuting culture. The designers traveled to their chosen ukay-ukay locations by ordinary public transportation, with Aivann riding a tricycle to Bambang, Ian boarding a jeepney to Recto, and Joanne navigating the familiar streets of España on foot.

Meanwhile, inside the studio, hosts Danna and Cheki were joined by fashion consultant and CEO Ms. Marion Solon, whose expert insights guided viewers through the fast-paced and often overwhelming experience of thrift shopping. Despite the pressure and unpredictability of the hunt, all three contestants successfully gathered the materials they needed for the competition. For the show’s major design challenge, the contestants were instructed to interpret the theme “Peak Hours: What It Takes to Get There”. To critique the designers’ work, the program assembled a progressive panel of judges composed of Ms. Marion Solon, rising fashion designer Reese Latonio, and filmmaker and costume designer Cris Cao.

Reese Latonio recently debuted his namesake fashion label through his graduation collection, Sidlak, while Cris Cao built his creative foundation through his work with Project 8 Projects. Together, the panel evaluated how effectively the designers translated personal narratives into wearable art. The grand runway presentation served as the culmination of the competition, with every contestant unveiling pieces that reflected unique stories and perspectives. Aivann’s creation, Bound by the Rush, portrayed the suffocating nature of urban commuting through a constricting corset silhouette, distressed vertical lines inspired by railway tracks, and a clock-inspired handbag symbolizing the persistence required of daily commuters.

Her emotionally resonant presentation earned her the Runway Regal award for best stage presence. Ian secured the Haul of Fame award for his impressive collection of thrifted materials. His design paid tribute to provincial students who leave their hometowns to pursue opportunities in Manila.

Drawing inspiration from the traditional banga, his garment incorporated fading provincial tones to represent the sacrifices, struggles, and emotional weight of leaving behind his home in Santa Maria, Isabela. In the end, Joanne emerged as the competition’s overall winner, earning both the Mending Maestro award for technical excellence and the grand title of Most Iconic Ukay Royalty. Inspired by the utilitarian aesthetic of Renan Pacson, her modern Filipiniana ensemble utilized rigid denim fabrics to echo the exhaustion and discomfort of long commutes. Spiral accents symbolized endless rush-hour queues, eyelets represented overcrowded transportation systems, and authentic receipts highlighted the financial strain that accompanies everyday labor and travel.

Through its inventive challenges and emotionally grounded storytelling, Make and Mend! successfully reframed ukay-ukay culture as more than just an affordable shopping experience. The show positioned thrifting as a stylish, practical, and environmentally conscious response to the growing global sustainability crisis. At the end, M&M Studios delivered a compelling reminder that the future of fashion lies in sustainability, and that true style is defined not merely by appearance, but by purpose and intention.

Make and Mend!: A Stylish Spin on Sustainable Fashion

Three fashion experts compete to transform thrifted finds into a confidence-boosting outfit for one deserving beneficiary—proving that sustainability can be creative, practical, and empowering.

Make and Mend! is an upcoming three-part reality lifestyle show that fuses fashion, sustainability, and storytelling into one engaging competition. Centered on a single beneficiary, the series follows three talented stylists as they design the perfect outfit for a meaningful upcoming event. Each episode builds toward a final runway reveal where both judges and the beneficiary select the winning look.

Rooted in the principles of Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, the show highlights the environmental impact of fast fashion while offering accessible alternatives. Instead of promoting constant consumption, Make and Mend! encourages viewers to embrace thrifting, repairing garments, and investing in long-lasting pieces. Sustainability is framed not as a daunting obligation, but as a series of small, achievable choices that can collectively make a difference.

The format unfolds across three stages: understanding the beneficiary’s style needs, consulting with a dermatologist and tailoring for expert insights, and sourcing materials from thrift stores before reconstructing them into fresh designs. This progression transforms the show into both a competition and a practical guide, offering viewers valuable lessons in garment construction and ethical fashion practices.

With its magazine-style structure, the program blends fast-paced thrift challenges, informative interviews, and creative montages into a cohesive narrative. The host plays a dynamic role—educator, interviewer, and runway announcer—ensuring a smooth and engaging viewing experience.

Targeted primarily at Gen Z and students, Make and Mend! also appeals to DIY enthusiasts and reality TV fans seeking feel-good, purpose-driven content. By combining high-energy entertainment with meaningful advocacy, the show redefines fashion as a force for creativity, responsibility, and positive change.

DOST-PTRI, Bayo Manila partner to turn textile waste into tomorrow’s fashion through TexRev’s ‘Fabric-to-Yarn’ innovation

February 2025, Philippines – As the fashion industry grapples with the insurmountable problem of textile waste and increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), in partnership with Bayo Manila Inc. through DOST’s CRADLE Program, has launched the Textile Revitalized (TexRev) Project. This initiative is geared to revolutionize the Philippine textile industry by converting post-industrial fabric scraps into sustainable yarns. Doing so provides an effective solution for tackling textile waste while driving circularity.

The urgency to address textile waste has never been more urgent. In 2023, household spending on clothing and footwear in the country reached nearly ₱232 billion, this reflects the sector’s rapid expansion but also shows its growing industrial waste problem. Globally, textile production soared from 58 million tons in 2000 to approximately 109 million tons in 2020. This figure is projected to increase by 160 million tons as we reach 2030.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that the fashion industry accounts for up to 2-8% of global carbon emissions and is the second-largest consumer of water. As brands worldwide face increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices, TexRev positions the Philippines as a key player in the circular fashion movement.

Bayo Manila, a homegrown clothing brand, generates around 16 tons of textile waste annually. Without a proper recycling system, much of this waste contributes to landfill overflow and environmental degradation. TexRev disrupts this cycle by repurposing discarded fabrics into high-quality yarns, which drastically cuts down water and energy consumption compared to traditional virgin fiber production.

“Through our commitment to the UN Global Compact and collaborations with PTRI, we are proving that a Filipino fashion brand can be a leader in circular fashion, making an impact both locally and globally. We believe that the future of fashion is truly circular,” said Ms. Anna Losanta Marie A. Lagon, Co-CEO of Bayo Manila, Inc., during the 2025 National Textile Convention (TELACon).

The TexRev process begins with collecting and sorting textile waste by color and material type. The fabrics are then cut, shredded into fibers, and then tested for quality. After impurities are removed through carding, the fibers are spun into yarns and blended with virgin materials for added strength and durability. These yarns are then woven into fabrics and undergo finishing treatments such as dyeing, water repellency, and antimicrobial coating for sustainable fashion and home textile use.

Currently, the TexRev project targets garment manufacturers, providing them with a responsible alternative to conventional textiles. By reintroducing textile waste into production, TexRev provides a practical path that will minimize a company’s environmental footprint while maintaining product quality.

Beyond waste reduction, this project aims to spark a systemic change in the industry. During the project launch, industry leaders weighed in on the role of sustainability in reshaping the creative sector. Panelists included DOST-PTRI Director Dr. Julius L. Leaño, Jr.; Ms. Marie Venus Q. Tan, Co-Chairperson of the City of Baguio Creative Council and Board Trustee at Bayo Manila Foundation; Ms. Dawn F. Cabigon, General Manager of Fairs & More Inc. and Campaign Manager of the UN’s Race to Net Zero Philippines Inc.; and Mr. Alvin Tejada, Founder of APTCS Group and Chairperson of the UAP Green Architecture Movement. Discussions centered on the changes needed to integrate eco-conscious practices into mainstream textile, creative, and fashion industries.

"The creative industry has become a powerful catalyst for integrating innovations that promote sustainable production and the responsible use of natural materials in ways that resonate with consumers. As highly visual and experiential people, Filipinos connect with what resonates, making the creative sector essential in advancing the sustainability agenda by transforming eco-conscious ideas into tangible, relatable experiences that inspire real change,” said DOST-PTRI Director Dr. Julius L. Leaño, Jr.

As fast fashion reckons with growing calls for accountability, this project showcases how innovation can propel the industry toward circularity.

Dr. Leaño Jr. emphasizes that “TexRev is more than just a recycling initiative, it’s a movement toward a circular economy, demonstrating that waste can be transformed into new opportunities.”
