Protecting Children in the Digital Age: Why Online Safety Requires Everyone

The rapid growth of digital technology has transformed how children learn, communicate, create, and connect. But as young people spend more time online, new forms of exploitation, violence, and manipulation are emerging. Addressing these threats requires more than technology alone—it demands cooperation among government, law enforcement, industry, schools, families, and communities.

This was the focus of “Protecting Children in the Digital Age: A Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Online Violence, Child Exploitation and Digital Safety,” led by PROTECTA Pilipinas, a multi-sector alliance spearheaded by PLDT. The forum brought together representatives from government, telecommunications, education, media, law enforcement, mental health, and the private sector to strengthen collective efforts toward a safer digital environment for Filipino children.

Atty. Roy D. Ibay, Smart VP and Head of Regulatory Affairs and lead convenor of PROTECTA, emphasized that no single organization can secure the digital ecosystem alone. Protecting children requires government, industry, civil society, and communities to work together.

PLDT Chief Operating Officer Menardo G. Jimenez Jr. highlighted the moral responsibility of telecommunications companies to help protect children from harmful online platforms and communities. His message was particularly clear: the protection of even one child matters. As online threats evolve beyond exploitation and pornography to include scams, grooming, coercion, and violent content, digital safety strategies must evolve as well.

Usec. Angelo Tapales of the Council for the Welfare of Children stressed that children should not be expected to protect themselves from online risks. Their experiences and voices should inform solutions, but adults must carry the responsibility of creating safer digital spaces.

Law enforcement also pointed to the changing nature of online harm. Lt. Col. Ayn Natuel of the PNP Women and Children Protection Center noted that highly networked online communities can exploit, groom, blackmail, and manipulate vulnerable young people.

The forum underscored that child protection is ultimately a digital resilience issue. Stronger laws, platform accountability, effective content moderation, responsible creators, parental guidance, education, mental health support, and community awareness must work together.

As technology continues to reshape everyday life, the goal should not be to prevent children from accessing the digital world. Instead, society must ensure that children can benefit from technology without having to choose between being connected and being safe.

Globe Empowers Youth and School Leaders in Capiz and Quezon to Advance Online Safety and Responsible Online Behavior

Globe brought its Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) to Sigma, Capiz, and Tayabas, Quezon, equipping youth leaders and school heads with the knowledge and skills to promote safer, more responsible online behavior. Through the initiative, Globe is expanding digital citizenship education beyond the classroom by empowering community and education leaders to champion digital safety where it matters most.

Building on its previous DTP engagements with more than 650 youth and student participants in Western Visayas early this year, Globe conducted a follow-through session in Sigma, Capiz to complete its training for the municipality's remaining Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials and recent graduates. In Quezon, Globe also conducted DTP sessions for school heads representing municipalities across the province, strengthening their capacity to promote digital citizenship, cybersecurity awareness, and responsible AI use in schools.

"Young leaders can influence how their communities embrace technology. By equipping them with practical knowledge on digital safety, we are investing in a generation that can help create a safer and more responsible online environment for everyone. We hope they will share these lessons with their fellow youth and inspire more Filipinos to become responsible digital citizens,"
said Jun Juada, Globe Director for Western Visayas.

More than 30 SK officials and recent graduates participated in the follow-through session under Globe's #GoSafeWithGlobe campaign in Sigma, while 41 school heads from 25 public schools representing municipalities across Quezon Province joined the training. The sessions equipped participants to protect personal information, recognize online threats, promote responsible technology use, and foster safer digital environments in their communities and schools.

"This training gave me practical knowledge that I can immediately apply in my daily life and share with fellow youth members in our barangay. As an SK official, I have a responsibility to help create a safer online environment by encouraging others to practice responsible digital behavior," said Ramel Baclor Flores, SK Chairperson of Barangay Poblacion Sur, Municipality of Sigma, Capiz.

The Tayabas session also strengthened the capacity of school heads to guide teachers and learners in responsible technology use as schools continue to integrate digital tools into teaching and learning.

"Preparing our school leaders for today's digital landscape is essential to creating safe and responsible learning environments. Through Globe's Digital Thumbprint Program, our school heads are better equipped to guide teachers and learners in practicing responsible digital citizenship and making informed use of technology," said Celedonio Balderas Jr., Schools Division Superintendent, City of Tayabas.

Now in its 10th year, Globe's award-winning Digital Thumbprint Program continues to evolve to address emerging online challenges. Since its launch in 2016, the initiative has reached over 4,100 schools, engaged 115,394 teachers, and provided access to more than two million students and educators nationwide.

"School leaders are among our strongest partners in promoting responsible digital citizenship. By investing in their digital readiness, we hope to empower more school communities to embrace technology safely, confidently, and responsibly," said Adonis Evangelista, Globe General Manager for South Luzon.

Through the Digital Thumbprint Program and the #GoSafeWithGlobe campaign, Globe continues to work with schools, local government units, and community organizations to equip more Filipinos with the knowledge and confidence to thrive safely in the digital world. Cotabato City’s Ongoing Push for Cashless Payments via GCash Simplifies Tax, Fee Payments

Paying government fees in Cotabato City has become faster, safer, and more convenient as the local government unit (LGU) officially rolled out cashless payment options with GCash, the Philippines’ leading finance superapp and largest cashless ecosystem.

Since the partnership launch in May 2024, the initiative has introduced Scan to Pay and Bills Pay features that allow citizens to settle local taxes and fees directly from their mobile phones using the GCash app. This effort eliminates long lines at city offices and reduces the risks that come with manual cash transactions.

The move addresses long-standing challenges in an LGU’s collection system: prolonged queues, cash-handling inefficiencies, limited payment channels, and the lack of digital infrastructure. These issues have affected operations, LGU employees, and constituents.

Through the Scan to Pay feature, users can simply scan a QR code displayed in city offices to pay instantly. The Bills Pay feature, on the other hand, allows them to settle fees remotely anytime, removing the need to line up in person. Together, these features offer flexibility and accessibility for Cotabateños, while helping the local government reduce congestion and improve transparency in its financial processes.

The cashless system also enhances safety by minimizing physical cash handling and potential errors in manual recording. This ensures more accurate reconciliation and efficient fund management.

“The integration of GCash in Cotabato City is a testament to the powerful impact of digital transformation on local governance. By replacing cash with a secure, efficient, and transparent payment system, we are actively supporting the city in streamlining its administrative services and fostering a better experience for every constituent,” said Cleo Santos, Vice President and Head for Public Sector at GCash.

The partnership between Cotabato City and GCash forms part of a broader effort to digitize government payments in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), reinforcing the region’s ongoing digital transformation. In his State of the City Address, Mayor Bruce Matabalao said, “Over 1,200 market vendors and tricycle operators are now enrolled in PalengQR Ph Plus, and daily transactions have increased by 30 percent within the first year of implementation—reflecting strong local acceptance of cashless commerce.”

The program holds strong relevance for BARMM as the region continues to strengthen its economic foundations and expand its digital capacity amid ongoing development efforts. In Cotabato City, one of BARMM’s primary urban hubs, the initiative plays a key role in advancing financial inclusion by enabling residents to more conveniently and securely access essential services and government assistance through digital platforms.

By embracing this cashless ecosystem, Cotabato City is addressing operational bottlenecks commonly faced by LGUs while taking a crucial step toward inclusive digital adoption—empowering citizens to transact securely and confidently using technology they already have in their hands.

This collaboration reflects the growing role of digital finance in improving local governance, with GCash continuing to support local government units nationwide in building more efficient, transparent, and citizen-friendly systems.

Filipino Online Gambling Players Prefer Safer Regulation Over Prohibition - Study

Manila, Philippines — As online gambling continues to grow in the Philippines and remains at the center of national conversations, a recent study suggests that better regulations—not an outright ban—are needed to create a safer playing environment and prevent the proliferation of unregulated gambling platforms.

This is the key finding from the latest study by Filipino-focused sociocultural research firm The Fourth Wall, which analyzed the behaviors, motivations, and perceptions of Filipino online gamblers, particularly those using regulated platforms.

The study surveyed over 1,000 current online gambling players from urbanized areas across Mega Manila, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao, and key cities in other growth centers nationwide. Among those surveyed, the majority migrated from informal or unregulated street gambling environments, such as sabong, perya, or social media betting, and only 7% from land-based casinos.

The study categorized the respondents based on different levels of risk, self-perception, and gambling behavior. It found that 36% of respondents were ‘break-even optimists,’ or those who believe they break even, gamble moderately, and don't borrow funds. Meanwhile, 12% of them are ‘risky borrowing high-frequency bettors’—individuals with a high borrowing rate and relatively frequent gambling, placing them at risk of financial strain. Most of those surveyed (85%) do not borrow money for betting.

According to the study, curiosity, boredom, and peer influence were the top reasons for trying online gambling, and only 8% of respondents cite platform perks like bonuses and convenience, suggesting that gambling is not merely a transactional activity but a social and recreational activity for many Filipinos.

Safety and legitimacy are top priorities for online gambling players, who say they look for platforms that are legitimate to avoid scams, emphasizing the need for trustworthy platforms and effective regulation to guard against cheating and illegal gambling. However, even regulated platforms are not immune to user frustrations. Delayed withdrawals, lost money, and app glitches like login issues, errors during betting, and app crashes are players' top concerns.

The study highlights a strong preference for access to regulated online gambling with safeguards over outright prohibition. Over half of the respondents (53%) oppose a ban on regulated online gambling, while only 18% support it. Meanwhile, another 16% agree with a ban but with reservations. For 75% of online gambling players, a ban will not stop online gambling and would instead drive people toward illegal sites, social media betting, and unregulated foreign platforms. Instead, a majority (80%) support banning unregulated online gambling platforms mainly to avoid scams and curb addiction, especially among youth and low-income groups.

"Our study reveals greater preference for safer and regulated platforms among Filipino online gambling players. There is an understanding among them that an outright ban won't stop online gambling, but instead push it underground, increasing risks like scams and addiction through unregulated channels. This suggests their call for regulation is rooted in safer options and better consumer protection,” John Brylle L. Bae, Research Director at The Fourth Wall, said.

Latest data reports a 76% surge in online gambling scams in unregulated gambling platforms, revealing scammers are now targeting vulnerable users on social media, especially on Facebook.

The sentiment aligns with broader concerns raised in response to proposals for a total ban—particularly the risk that such a move could drive players toward unregulated platforms, as noted by some lawmakers in both the Lower and Upper Houses.

Furthermore, the study looked at players' perceptions of government regulation. About 73% of those surveyed say regulation from institutions such as PAGCOR matters. In particular, 61% believe PAGCOR is doing its job, but a significant 34% remain unsure, citing limited understanding of the agency's full responsibilities. This finding points to a need not only for regulation, but for clearer public education and transparent communication from regulators

The study observed that online gambling adoption surged post-pandemic from 2022 to 2024, with the strong influence of lockdowns, digital migration, and possibly increased advertising and social influence as factors. In 2024, online gambling recorded PHP 410 billion in gross gaming revenue (GGR), and it is projected to reach up to PHP 480 billion this year.

Additionally, e-wallets play a key role in responsible gambling. The majority of players (92%) prefer using GCash, followed by Maya (6%), while only 2% use over-the-counter payment outlets. Approximately 73% of e-wallet users trust the platforms' age and identity checks, and 64% believe these platforms effectively help them regulate their spending, enabling them to play responsibly.

"The study is not about promoting or going against gambling, but about recognizing both the cultural realities and regulatory responsibilities at hand with the ultimate aim of protecting people. As online gambling continues to rise in the country, there must be a shift toward more data-driven, research-informed dialogue toward regulation and policymaking," Bae emphasized.

Bad Connection? You May Just Need to Reset Your Modem

Resetting your modem can be a simple yet effective way to solve many common internet issues. Whether you’re experiencing slow speeds, or intermittent connections, or your WiFi just isn’t working as it should, a quick reset can often do the trick.

To see if your modem needs a reset, check its lights. If the LOS or third light from the left is red, that means there’s no connection. If the PON or second light from the left is not on or is blinking, you may have connection issues. In both cases, a reset may do the trick to bring your modem back to life.

Globe At Home shows you five easy steps to get your modem back in action:

Step 1: Turn off and unplug your modem

Start by turning off your modem. Most modems have a power button located on the back or side of the device. Press this button to turn off the device, then unplug the power adapter from the modem.

Step 2: Wait for 30 seconds

Wait for 30 seconds to give your modem time to fully power down and clear any temporary issues that may have been causing connectivity problems.

Step 3: Check your cables

Take a moment to check if all the cables connected to your modem are secure. This includes the power cable, fiber patch cord, Ethernet cables, and any other connections your modem might have. Loose or improperly connected cables could be a source of connectivity issues. Double-check them to save you from future headaches.

Step 4: Plug back in and power on

After your 30-second wait, it’s time to bring your modem back to life. Plug the power adapter back into the modem. Once connected, press the power button to turn the modem on.

Step 5: Wait for the lights and reconnect to WiFi

Your modem will go through a series of checks as it powers up. You’ll see the lights blinking and flashing in various patterns. Wait for these lights to stabilize. Once stable, it’s time to reconnect your devices to the WiFi.

"Staying connected is crucial in today’s digital age. Simply resetting your modem can save time and reduce frustration. Consider resetting your modem every few months or whenever you experience connectivity problems," said Abigail Cardino, VP and Head of Brand Management for Globe’s Broadband Business.

Technology isn’t always perfect, but a little know-how can go a long way in keeping your online experience smooth and enjoyable. Remember to take care of your modem to avoid additional charges in case the device is damaged and should be replaced.

PLDT, Smart join panel at ASEAN ICT Forum on Child Online Protection, raise need for agile and tech-savvy laws to combat online child abuse

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, 14 December 2023 - The Philippines’ leading integrated telecommunications network PLDT Inc. (PLDT) and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) participated as private sector representatives and highlighted the importance of harmonizing policies with technology during one of the panel sessions in the recent ASEAN ICT Forum on Child Online Protection held in Bangkok,Thailand.

Co-organized by Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC), and supported by UNICEF’s East Asia and Pacific Regional Office, the forum aimed at strengthening regional cooperation on various aspects of child online protection, including the fight against online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC) and child sexual abuse and exploitation materials (CSAEM).

The forum had more than 220 participants from various ASEAN countries and sectors, including representatives from the youth, government agencies, multi-lateral organizations, private sector, civil society organizations, and the academe. There were also delegates from China, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, South Korean, Japan, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Australia, Netherlands and France.

PLDT and Smart joined representatives from the Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) and Malaysia’s Attorney General’s Chambers on a panel session about legislative reforms on child online protection. Given the recent enactment of Republic Act (RA) 11930 or the Anti-OSAEC and Anti-CSAEM Act and the release of its implementing rules and regulations, Philippine representatives were asked to present learnings on the legislative reform process.

PLDT and Smart shared earlier industry challenges under the old law, the RA 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Law of 2009, and talked about Philippine telco contributions to its amending legislation, RA 11930.

Under the old law, telcos, or Internet Service Providers (ISPs), had the sole responsibility of blocking and filtering sites with online child abuse. Local ISPs then raised concerns in implementation as compliance equated to violations of the Philippine constitution and data privacy laws.

“Telcos were hamstrung as to what we can do to comply, as there were conflicting and unconstitutional provisions in the old law. And because it was a 2009 law, there were also no considerations on the roles of online payment channels and social media networks. Insofar as the public was concerned at that time, telcos were the bad guys and were not doing enough,” explained PLDT and Smart’s First Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Melissa Vergel de Dios.

PLDT and Smart worked with the government, fellow industry players, and various sectors in seeking clarity on responsibilities and in amending legislation to address earlier concerns with the old law.

“The Philippine government was very collaborative and welcomed private sector inputs for the amendment of the law. We thus joined the industry in making our position known, offering technical inputs, and even rallying to harmonize several related bills in Congress. We also took our government partners to a tour of our cyber security facilities and provided a technical briefing on how we actually work to combat cyber threats and risks,” she said.

Among the notable enhancements from the old law, RA 11930 now provides clarity on responsibilities of ISPs and broadens participation of the private sector in the fight against OsSAEC and CSAEM.

“We realized that the landscape of private sector was much broader than just the telcos, so we included internet intermediaries, payment service providers, internet hotspots, and even hotels [in the new law],” said DOJ Undersecretary Atty. Nicholas Ty.

Recognizing the evolution of online risks and growing concerns on potential dangers of Artificial Intelligence, Vergel de Dios shared further insights in crafting effective legislation against OSAEC and other digitally enabled crimes.

“Lawmaking has to be as dynamic and as agile as technology. The understanding of technology drives the need to be able to see whether our laws stay adequate or whether they need to be updated,” she said.

During the forum, the ACWC also released guidelines for ASEAN member countries on harmonized and comprehensive national legislation against all forms of online child sexual exploitation and abuse.

“We are proud of the development of RA 11930 as it very well aligns with the ASEAN guidelines, embodies adoption of an inclusive and adaptive legislative view of the digital ecosystem that enables online child abuse, as well as fosters active engagement of private sector and various entities in anti-OSAEC policymaking, response and prevention, among others,” expressed Ty.

Fulfilling their institutional commitment towards protecting children online and complying with RA 11930, PLDT and Smart have been integrating children’s rights into their operations and sustainability roadmap, implementing a Child Safeguarding Policy, and utilizing a Child Protection Platform solution that blocks online content and access attempts linked to OSAEC and CSAEM without violating privacy laws.

The telcos have also expressed continuing commitment towards capacity-building, global benchmarking, and pursuing multi-sectoral collaborations to remain abreast with solutions to protect children online and combat OSAEC and CSAEM.

E-commerce and Online Marketplaces: Transforming the Way Filipinos Shop

In recent years, the Philippines has witnessed a significant rise in the popularity of e-commerce and online marketplaces. With the advent of technology and the increasing accessibility of the internet, more and more Filipinos are turning to online platforms for their shopping needs. These digital marketplaces have revolutionized the retail industry, providing a convenient and efficient way to buy and sell products and services.

One of the most prominent e-commerce platforms in the Philippines is Lazada. Established in 2012, Lazada quickly gained popularity and has become the go-to online marketplace for millions of Filipinos. Offering a wide range of products from various categories, Lazada provides a seamless shopping experience with features like secure payment options, nationwide delivery, and customer reviews. The platform also regularly holds sale events, such as the annual "Lazada 11.11 Sale" and "Lazada Birthday Sale," attracting a massive number of shoppers looking for great deals and discounts.

Another popular e-commerce platform is Shopee. Launched in 2015, Shopee has gained a strong foothold in the Philippines with its user-friendly interface and diverse product offerings. Shopee's "Free Shipping" program and "Shopee Guarantee" provide added assurance to buyers, while their "Shopee Mall" offers a curated selection of authentic and quality products from trusted brands. Shopee also organizes regular campaigns, such as the "9.9 Super Shopping Day" and "12.12 Big Christmas Sale," which create a buzz and entice shoppers with exclusive promotions.

Apart from these big players, there is also a growing number of specialized online marketplaces catering to specific niches. For example, Zalora is a well-known platform for fashion and beauty products, while Foodpanda and GrabFood dominate the food delivery scene. Carousell, on the other hand, focuses on peer-to-peer selling, allowing individuals to buy and sell pre-loved items within their local communities.

The rise of e-commerce and online marketplaces in the Philippines has brought several advantages to both consumers and sellers. Shoppers enjoy the convenience of browsing through a vast selection of products, comparing prices, and making purchases from the comfort of their homes. For sellers, these platforms provide an opportunity to reach a broader audience, establish their brand, and grow their business without the need for a physical store.

However, with the increasing popularity of e-commerce, competition among sellers has also intensified. To stand out in this crowded space, sellers need to prioritize factors such as product quality, competitive pricing, excellent customer service, and efficient order fulfillment. Adapting to the evolving trends and preferences of online shoppers is crucial to staying relevant and successful in this digital marketplace landscape.

As technology continues to advance and internet accessibility improves, the e-commerce industry in the Philippines is expected to further expand and evolve. The convenience, accessibility, and endless possibilities offered by online marketplaces are reshaping the way Filipinos shop. Whether it's for daily necessities, fashion items, or specialized products, e-commerce platforms have become an integral part of the modern consumer experience in the Philippines.

Overall, the rise of e-commerce and online marketplaces has revolutionized the retail landscape in the Philippines. Platforms like Lazada, Shopee, and specialized marketplaces have transformed the way Filipinos shop, offering convenience, variety, and competitive pricing. As more consumers embrace online shopping, businesses need to adapt and innovate to stay relevant in this digital era. The future of e-commerce in the Philippines looks promising, with endless opportunities for growth and success.

Cagayan de Oro's scholar-leaders benefit from PLDT & Smart, advancing online learning

PLDT’s wireless arm Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) continues to support Cagayan de Oro’s scholars through the City Scholarships Office (CSO). Smart recently turned over connectivity devices to more than 300 scholars to help them continue their online learning and leverage technology for leadership building.

City Mayor Rolando 'Klarex' Uy said, “We are very grateful that Smart continues to look out for the needs of our scholars, knowing the importance of technology nowadays. Thank you for giving value to our scholars who will benefit from these free devices.”

Dubbed Iskolar sa Dakbayan (ISDA), the student beneficiaries are funded by the city government’s premier scholarship program for tertiary education. It aims to empower young Kagay-anons to finish their studies and be catalysts for change in their communities.

Annie Rose Achas, an ISDA leader in far-flung barangay Mambuaya, believes that connectivity is important not only for online learning but also for their community programs. “We conduct reading tutorials for struggling high school learners and with the internet service from Smart, we have easier access to credible references and materials for our advocacy,” she said.

“Our partnership with Smart has helped us reach out to our scholar-leaders through these devices. Partnerships and collaboration have now been made easier among our volunteers and partners. We thank Smart for building dreams with us,” said Richel Petalcurin Dahay, Head of CSO.

This effort is part of PLDT and Smart’s #NoLearnerLeftBehind advocacy, which underscores the PLDT Group’s commitment to helping the country attain the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly SDG No. 4 on Inclusive Quality Education.

PLDT targets Petabit international capacity

In a bid to deliver better customer experience, PLDT aims to breach the Petabit-level (1,000 Terabits) in international capacity, as it invests in more strategic international subsea cables in the next five years. The roll-out of new cables rests on the sharp increase in demand for international network capacity as well as the sustained vibrant business conditions of the Philippines, and are meant to further advance the country’s emerging digital economy, attract global hyperscalers, and future-proof its infrastructure.

“PLDT’s continuous investments in international submarine cables not only provide our customers better online experience, but they also help boost the country’s digital economy including the proliferation of fintech, help create more jobs, and attract interested global tech giants or hyperscalers to invest here,” said Mitch L. Locsin, PLDT and Smart First Vice President and Head of Enterprise and International Business Groups.

With the launch of the Jupiter Cable system in July 2022, the PLDT Group has since tripled its international capacity. It will soon reach 100 Terabits by end-2023 once the Asia Direct Cable (ADC) system consortium finishes the construction of all landing sites and the installation of submarine cable across East and Southeast Asia.

Recently, PLDT completed the landing of the shore-end segment of the ADC system in Nasugbu, Batangas. Once fully operational, the 9,400-kilometer cable system will further add at least 36 Terabits to PLDT’s international capacity and bolster the Philippines’ digital advantage to service global hyperscalers.

PLDT has also announced the construction of another cable system called Apricot that is expected to be in service by mid-2025. This US$80 million investment will raise PLDT’s total international capacity to more than 130Tbps, and reinforce its links to Guam, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore.

“Together with our massive investments in Data Centers and newer technologies, these international cable infrastructures signify our commitment to provide customers faster and better digital services and help steer the country towards becoming a preferred digital hub for the expansion of tech giants and hyperscalers,” said PLDT Vice President and Global Capacity Strategy Head Gene Sanchez.

PLDT has significantly invested over the last 10 years, expanding its data center sites to 11, and increasing its domestic and international fiber footprint to over 1,091,000 kilometers as of end-September 2022.

Globe waives data charges on UNICEF’s SaferKidsPH platform to boost fight against online child exploitation

Globe is giving its customers free access to UNICEF’s SaferKidsPH platform, in line with efforts to democratize information on proper data protection and reporting cases, when witnessed, as well as curb online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC).

When visiting the SaferKidsPH online platform,  Globe and TM customers will not incur any data charges. The website offers plenty of information about OSAEC -- what it is, ways to fight it, and the different channels to report such cases.

“As a strong advocate of child online safety, we want to keep Filipino children safe even as they are constantly exposed to the internet. Our partnership with UNICEF for SaferKidsPH is not only a commitment, but also a call for our customers to join us in fighting OSAEC together,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications.

Globe and UNICEF, through SaferKidsPH have been working hand-in-hand to promote online safety and security among children since 2019. SaferKidsPH is an Australian Government initiative delivered through the consortium of Save the Children Philippines, The Asia Foundation, and UNICEF to reduce the online sexual abuse and exploitation of children in the Philippines.

Likewise, Globe collaborates with local and international organizations like the UK-based Internet Watch Foundation to take down webpages, keywords, hash lists, and digital fingerprints containing child abuse materials.  Another partner is the Canadian Center for Child Protection (CCCP) which helps Globe identify illegal websites and block them out of its network. The CCCP is known for its capabilities to constantly search the web for harmful platforms.

Globe is also supporting UNICEF’s Child Protection and Child Rights and Business Programs in the Philippines as part of its #MakeITSafe campaign.

Both camps aim to develop an awareness and education campaign on OSAEC and online child protection, which includes the expansion of the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), a series of capacity-building workshops organized by Globe to educate the youth and other stakeholders about digital citizenship and the responsible use of technology.

Globe’s 5G service now available to Prepaid and TM Subscribers

As more Filipinos embrace doing things digitally, from the way they learn to the way they make a living, the clamor for better internet connectivity is stronger than ever. The desire to serve this need is what propels Globe to bring internet connectivity, particularly the latest 5G technology, to more Filipinos.

Back in February, Globe introduced 5G to its most elite set of customers, Globe Platinum. Shortly after, the said technology was extended to all Globe Postpaid customers. And, starting August 24, Globe Prepaid and TM customers are now able to access Globe’s 5G network in areas like Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Makati CBD, Rockwell Center, Ortigas CBD, and strategic areas along EDSA and C5. All these customers need to do is to ensure they are on a Globe LTE or TM  LTE sim and have a 5G-enabled mobile phone. No additional fees will be charged to enjoy this lightning-fast connection.

“As the Philippines is largely a Prepaid market, we are thrilled to be the first telecom to expand the 5G service to them. With the vision of bringing the next generation of connectivity to all, Globe Prepaid and TM customers have now been enabled to enjoy the 5G service. And, with the goal of making high-speed internet access to as many Filipinos as possible, we will continue to broaden our 5G coverage and make 5G-enabled devices more accessible,” says Globe VP for Strategic Platforms and Partnerships Coco Domingo. “We envision a world of impossibilities made possible by Globe 5G.”

5G is the next generation of wireless internet connectivity. With the technology, users can stream movies and TV shows at the highest-quality; play immersive online games with fewer lags, and provide the clearest resolution for video chats.

In 2019, Globe became the first telco in Southeast Asia to launch 5G when it introduced its AirFiber broadband for Globe at Home subscribers. Shortly after, Globe unveiled the first 5G service for mobile and introduced the first 5G device in the country, followed by more affordable 5G-capable phones.

PLDT Enterprise enables free access to WHO, DOH’s COVID KAYA tracing app

(Manila, Philippines – July 2020) In support of the government’s efforts to ramp up contact tracing capacity for COVID-19 cases, PLDT Enterprise enables free access to COVID KAYA app developed by the Department of Health (DOH) Epidemiology Bureau.

PLDT Enterprise is offering registered health workers free access and required connectivity for the COVID KAYA mobile tracing app in cooperation with DOH, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

Contact-tracing app COVID KAYA is a real-time reporting platform used exclusively by registered health workers in the country to track all COVID-19 cases and contacts. Through this partnership, app users need not worry about incurring mobile data charges.

“PLDT Enterprise's focus on Bayanihan is best exemplified by our commitment to continuously provide the right technology solutions for the problems we face today. With this initiative, we hope to further enable DOH in their endeavors to respond to and combat COVID-19,” said Jovy Hernandez, ePLDT President & CEO and SVP & Head for PLDT and Smart Enterprise Business Groups.

Healthcare providers using this app can easily report cases to the DOH Epidemiology Bureau, allowing the health agency to handle case investigations and interview those who may have come in contact with infected individuals. The app's real-time monitoring capability will show the bottlenecks and delays in inpatient services across the continuum of care. Moreover, frontline responders will be able to use COVID KAYA to better manage their work.

With WHO's support, DOH aims to simplify using COVID KAYA to allow the smooth flow of critical data among frontline responders. Currently, the two main priorities for the app include boosting the efficient data entry and data management of COVID-19 cases and their contacts, as well as simplifying real-time data entry in COVID KAYA.

“The timely sharing of data and speedy action to contain transmission is critical in saving lives,” said Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe, Acting WHO Representative in the Philippines. “As the country expands testing, contact tracing in order to track, isolate and treat is an important step in reducing the impact of COVID-19 to secure a healthy future and building back our society and economy. COVID KAYA is a helpful tool for the government and public health workforce to quickly collect, analyze and share information -  we need to empower our front liners and help them make decisions efficiently.”

This collaboration with WHO and DOH is one of the ongoing initiatives that PLDT Enterprise has been engaging in since the pandemic began. PLDT Enterprise is continuously pushing efforts to make connectivity more accessible and available to the public and private sectors at this time.
