Coca-Cola Philippines Partners with Biñan LGU, DILG to Expand Community-Based PET Bottle Collection in Laguna

Coca-Cola Philippines continues its expansion of the Tapon to Ipon PET bottle collection program to Biñan City, Laguna through a new partnership with the City Government, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Laguna, and Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. (BEST Inc.).

The launch was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signing, followed by an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) and registration activity in Barangay Canlalay. The program’s initial rollout onboarded 50 store owners across 10 barangays, with five participating stores from each barangay.

Present at the event were DILG Laguna Provincial Director Jay-Ar Beltran, Biñan City Mayor Angelo Alonte, Coca-Cola Philippines Senior Director for Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability Ma. Christine Ponce-Garcia, Senior Manager for Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability; Misha Rabat; and BEST Inc. Senior Vice President for Business Development, Jan Vincent.

Bringing Tapon to Ipon to more communities

The partnership aims to make PET bottle collection more accessible within communities by bringing collection points closer to residents. Under Tapon to Ipon, participating sari-sari stores and local retailers serve as community-based collection hubs where residents can bring their used clear PET bottles of any brand.

Participating retailers collect and consolidate PET bottles brought by members of their communities. Store owners can earn points based on the PET bottles they collect, which can then be redeemed for a range of rewards, including Coca-Cola products, online shopping vouchers, food products, and credits toward utility bill payments.

The program aims to collect and divert recovered PET bottles for recycling, bringing collected materials to PETValue Philippines in Cavite, the country’s first bottle-to-bottle, food-grade PET recycling facility.

Each partner brings a distinct role to the program. The City Government of Biñan will help mobilize city and barangay officials and communities, while Coca-Cola Philippines will provide collection tools and Tapon to Ipon kits to partner retailers. BEST Inc. will support program operations and collection activities, with the Philippine Association of Stores and Carinderia Owners (PASCO) supporting engagement with participating store owners and the local retail community, as well as the DILG taking the lead in monitoring the program’s outcomes.

“We assure that the city government of Biñan is committed to this project and will ensure that our communities will be deeply involved in the program. The community’s active participation is key to bringing this project to life and ensuring its success,” said Alonte.

Ma. Christine Ponce-Garcia, Coca-Cola Philippines Senior Director for Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, echoed the importance of collaboration in strengthening local collection systems.

“We know that strong and effective recycling value chains cannot be built by one organization alone. It takes collaboration. We look forward to seeing this partnership grow, and more importantly, become part of the habits and practices of communities across the city of Biñan. May this partnership inspire more communities to see every bottle returned. It is an opportunity to create lasting environmental and social impact,” Ponce-Garcia noted.

The rollout in Biñan City marks Tapon to Ipon’s expansion into South Luzon, adding to a program that has reached more than 170 cities and municipalities nationwide since its launch in 2021.

Equipping more store owners on the ground

The Tapon to Ipon team oriented participating retailers on the program, proper PET bottle disposal and collection, and their role as community collection hubs. The activity also distributed Tapon to Ipon kits and tools to help store owners participate in the collection effort.

For Coca-Cola Philippines, the partnership demonstrates how LGUs, government agencies, retailers, and private-sector organizations can work together to strengthen local PET bottle collection and support a more organized recycling value chain. The company will continue working with partners to expand community-based collection efforts and explore opportunities to bring Tapon to Ipon to more cities and communities.

The activity not only strengthened internal awareness about environmental stewardship but also reinforced the organization’s culture of shared responsibility toward ecological protection.

This Earth Day program reflects LG’s broader sustainability strategy, which extends across its global operations. The company continues to implement initiatives focused on responsible recycling, resource recovery, and environmental education across multiple business sites worldwide. By integrating sustainability into its corporate practices, LG supports global efforts to reduce electronic waste and promote circular economy principles.

Programs like this also serve as a reminder that environmental protection is a collective responsibility. Corporate-led initiatives, combined with employee engagement and partnerships with accredited waste management facilities, create meaningful progress toward more sustainable communities.

As environmental concerns continue to shape the future of business operations, LG Electronics Philippines’ e-waste collection campaign stands as a strong example of how organizations can take practical, measurable steps toward reducing their environmental footprint. Through continued collaboration and responsible practices, initiatives like these contribute to building a cleaner and more sustainable future for everyone.

Refresh, De-Wrinkle, Dehumidify: LG Styler Brings Everyday Clothing Care to Filipino Homes

MANILA, Philippines — Everyday wardrobe care just got easier and more intuitive with the arrival of the LG Styler with Built-In HandySteamer in the Philippines, a versatile clothing care solution that uses steam and movement to refresh garments with minimal effort.

Designed to fit naturally into modern homes, the LG Styler goes beyond traditional steaming. It combines thoughtful garment care technology with everyday convenience, so clothes look and feel fresher between washes.

Changhee Doh, Product Director for Home Solutions, LG Electronics Philippines, said: “LG Styler brings a new level of convenience to clothing care — helping families keep their wardrobes ready with ease and confidence.”

Steam-Powered Freshness Made Simple

The LG Styler features a handheld, high-pressure steamer that simplifies removing wrinkles from shirts and other garments. This steamer uses powerful steam to penetrate fabric and leave clothes smooth and soft, reducing the need for repeated ironing.

With the steamer stored conveniently inside the unit, users can hang wrinkled clothes, bring out the steamer, and start the steam process with just the press of a button — making wardrobe upkeep effortless.

Tailored Care Through Intelligent Motion

LG Styler’s Dynamic Moving Hanger™ system delivers garment care that adapts to different fabrics. Unlike traditional systems that move garments side-to-side, this updated hanger system rotates and twists clothes, helping improve dust removal, deodorization, drying, and wrinkle reduction.

Additional garment care cycles like Fine Dust gently twist and shake clothing up to 350 times per minute, helping remove fine dust particles for cleaner-feeling garments.

Customized Steam with Dual TrueSteam™

At the heart of LG Styler’s performance is Dual TrueSteam™ technology, which employs two steam generators to more precisely manage steam volume and strength. This allows optimized treatment for a wide range of fabrics — from everyday cotton to delicate materials like silk and cashmere — delivering gentle care where needed.

This advanced steam control also enables cycles like the Sanitary cycle, which targets germ reduction through enhanced steam treatment.

Fresher Clothes, Fresher Living

Beyond steaming and wrinkle management, LG Styler offers built-in air circulation and dehumidification functions that help freshen clothes and the room. Its AutoFresh System™ circulates air to keep fabrics smelling fresh, while the dehumidification feature can remove up to 10 liters of moisture per day from the air without opening the door, helping maintain comfort and prevent dampness.

These capabilities make the LG Styler suited not just for wardrobe maintenance but for enhancing the home environment, especially in humid tropical climates.

Everyday Ease, Everyday Confidence

The LG Styler also includes practical design elements like an intuitive touch display and space-saving form factor, making advanced clothing care accessible to busy households. Whether refreshing work clothes, delicates, or outerwear, the Styler offers a simple way to manage fabrics with confidence and convenience.

The LG Styler is available via the LG Online Brand Shop (lg.com/ph) and authorized LG dealers nationwide, making advanced garment care more accessible for Filipino homes.

Coca-Cola Philippines Drives Water Stewardship With Reforestation Activity at La Mesa Watershed

MANILA, Philippines – Coca-Cola Philippines employees gathered at La Mesa Dam on December 17, 2025, for a tree-planting activity with the Million Trees Foundation, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability through hands-on volunteerism. The effort highlighted how corporate participation and community action can help protect one of Metro Manila’s most critical water sources.

At the Million Trees Nursery and Eco Learning Center within the La Mesa Watershed in Quezon City, Coca-Cola Philippines employees came together to plant native seedlings. The initiative forms part of the larger Annual Million Trees Challenge (AMTC), a long-term watershed rehabilitation program that began under Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) and is now being sustained by the Million Trees Foundation, Inc. (MTFI) with the goal of planting 10 million more trees by 2030.

La Mesa Dam is Metro Manila’s primary watershed and one of the remaining major forest reserves in the region. Its protection is essential to ensuring a clean, stable water supply for the capital. Reforestation efforts—especially those that focus on tree-growing, not just tree-planting—contribute to soil conservation, improved groundwater recharge, and long-term ecological resilience.

“The strength of the Million Trees Initiative comes from collective effort. When partners like Coca-Cola Philippines show up on the ground, it accelerates our work to restore critical watersheds like La Mesa,” Mr. Melandrew T. Velasco, Million Trees Foundation Inc, President and Executive Director. “Each seedling planted today is part of a bigger commitment to protect the ecosystems that support millions of Filipinos.”

For employee volunteers, the activity was a meaningful way to take part in environmental protection while gaining a deeper appreciation of watershed stewardship — a core focus of the company’s Sustainability Matters campaign. “Today proved that sustainability is about action — and that small efforts become meaningful when we work as one,” said Maria Christine Garcia, Senior Director of Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability of Coca-Cola Philippines.

Tony del Rosario, President of Coca-Cola Philippines and Vice President for Franchise Operations East of Coca-Cola Far East Limited (CCFEL), underscored how employee volunteerism strengthens the company’s sustainability goals.

“Our sustainability journey is grounded in strong partnerships, long-term commitments, and the dedication of our people. Initiatives like this underscore the vital role each of us plays in safeguarding essential resources such as the La Mesa Watershed,” said Tony del Rosario, President of Coca-Cola Philippines and Vice President for Franchise Operations East of Coca-Cola Far East Limited. “This activity reflects our broader commitment to environmental stewardship and to collaborating with communities and partners to create lasting, meaningful impact.”

GCash and UPLB: Leveraging Technology, Empowering Local Communities to Help Protect Sierra Madre and Mt. Makiling

The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) is partnering with GCash, the leading Philippine finance super app, through its GForest program, to address environmental threats like illegal forest conversion and accelerate the restoration of degraded lands within the Mount Makiling Georeserve and the Sierra Madre mountain range. The strategic partnership aims to protect and reforest 250 hectares of land within the two land grants managed by UPLB by planting at least 130,000 forest and fruit trees during the first phase, and another 25,000 seedlings for urban and roadside planting in parts of Mount Makiling Georeserve by 2029.

UPLB, as the Center for Excellence in Forestry Education, is set to implement its data-driven and science-based approach to identify suitable types of trees, strategic project areas, and apply implementation strategies to ensure environmental conservation and reforestation efforts translate into meaningful long-term impact.

The academic institution also seeks to tap local communities as long-term partners in planting and stewardship, empowering them through livelihood opportunities and ongoing involvement. These include women’s groups, people’s organizations, and qualified UPLB community members.

UPLB also seeks to engage participation and support from relevant local government units (LGUs) in Laguna, municipalities in Quezon province, and national-level government agencies like the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Science and Technology (DICT).

Marked by a ceremonial contract signing led by UPLB, its College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), the Land Grant Management Office (LGMO), and GCash, through the support of its 22-million GForest Green Heroes, pledged to plant at least 130,000 forest and fruit trees across 250 hectares in two land grant areas managed by UPLB in the Sierra Madre Mountain Range.

In addition, 10 kilometers of road within the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve will be planted with species ideal for urban settings. Another 25,000 seedlings will also be cultivated for roadside planting in various parts of Laguna province.

Roadside planting in the Mt. Makiling Georeserve will provide multiple benefits, including environmental, social, and economic advantages. In terms of environmental impact, it will lead to improved air and temperature quality, carbon sequestration, noise reduction, urban flood mitigation, pollination support, and urban wildlife habitat. From a social and economic perspective, it can improve recreational opportunities and mental wellbeing, lead to energy savings, and increase property values.

“Sierra Madre is one of our last frontiers when it comes to [our remaining] intact forests,” shared UPLB-CFNR Dean Marlo D. Mendoza, MDM. [This] is rich in terms of biodiversity [and is] very high in endemism, which means a lot of species that are in Sierra Madre can only be found there or [can be found in] the Philippines and not other parts of the world.”

Luzon’s backbone against natural hazards

The Sierra Madre mountain range, which spans approximately 600 kilometers from Cagayan to Quezon Province, is known as the “backbone of Luzon” and is home to lush forests and vital watersheds that support the nation’s diverse wildlife populations. In addition, it acts as a natural shield against typhoons coming from the Pacific, protecting the Philippines by weakening and redirecting storm winds before they reach inland areas.

The end goal of the UPLB and GCash reforestation initiative is to help restore and fortify parts of the UP Sierra Madre Land Grant. The trees planted aim to convert degraded lands (remnants of past logging, timber poaching, and unsustainable farming) into thriving ecosystems of tall native forest species that form a closed or semi-closed canopy.

Fundamental to the success of this program is UPLB’s sourcing process, which focuses on native tree species that are well-adapted to the local environment and support biodiversity. UPLB researchers have selected a diverse mix of native species, such as Mayapis, Apitong, White Lauan, Almon, and Palosapis, that can support canopy restoration while promoting ecological diversity.

Meanwhile, native tree species for urban areas— such as Salingogon, Katmon, Aunasin, and Pamitoyen have been selected based on tree architecture, height, climate adaptability, and the benefits offered, such as aesthetic values, shade, pollution reduction, and habitats for wildlife. To complete the project in the coming months, UPLB will also recruit the help of local communities to oversee the planting, care, monitoring, and evaluation activities thereafter.

By championing collaboration among scientists, organizations like GCash, and local communities, this partnership creates a holistic approach that addresses environmental challenges, enhances resilience, and turns residents into long-term environmental stewards. The program includes community-based monitoring to ensure survival rates and continuous ecological and social benefits.

“We are excited about this new partnership with GCash, as it allows us to explore the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of reforestation,” said Mendoza. “Together, we can implement UPLB’s proven methods to maximize benefits for both ecosystems and local communities.”

Through this partnership, GCash continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability. As a tech for good platform, we can bridge users with sustainability partners and environmental institutions, like UPLB, and contribute to real-world environmental efforts. CJ Alegre, GCash Head for Sustainability, added: “At GCash, we believe that technology can be a powerful tool for positive change."

4 Million Trees and Growing: How GForest 'Green Heroes' and Planting Partners Are Restoring Ecosystems & Communities

GForest, the in-app tech platform created by GCash to empower users to contribute to various environmental initiatives, its planting partners and 21 million GForest “Green Heroes” active users, have planted a monumental 4 million trees in 2024. This milestone has advanced the ecological and socioeconomic impact of reforestation and agroforestry projects carried out in partnership with the ABS-CBN Foundation, Culion Foundation, Friends of Hope, Inc., the Philippine Coffee Board, Inc. (PCBI), Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI), Silliman University, and The World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

GForest is a digital eco-movement where anyone can help the environment and empower local communities with just a few taps on their phones. GCash users can plant virtual trees by converting green energy points that they earn from in-app digital transactions (such as paying bills, sending money, or buying load). Actual, corresponding native and indigenous trees are planted by environmental partners in key areas across the country, with the planting sites also maintained by members of local communities to support their livelihoods.

This achievement marks the success of a multi-stakeholder model where conservation experts, environmental organizations, local communities, and GForest app users can all significantly contribute to environmental efforts through climate technology as they play a role in boosting the livelihoods of Filipino farmers.

“GForest is a key innovation within GCash that’s simple, easy, and accessible, allowing us to use tech for good to empower every Filipino to be part of the solution,” says CJ Alegre, GCash head for sustainability. “Environmental conservation is a shared responsibility, so it is amazing to see the significant strides we can make together to promote sustainability and combat climate change. We look forward to building on this strong foundation.”

As of 2024, 21 million active GForest users have contributed to planting 4,033,854 trees spanning 14,364 hectares in partnership with six nationwide planting partners and empowering and benefitting over 11,244 local farmers across the Philippines, including smallholder farmer families.

Joining forces: science and tech for good

Crucial to the success of GForest are the science-based strategies and local community engagement developed through the expertise of key environmental partners: WWF-Philippines, ABS-CBN Foundation, Philippine Coffee Board, Inc. (PCBI), Friends of Hope, Inc., Culion Foundation, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), and Silliman University.

To ensure environmentally sound activities and the long-term survival of species, these organizations have meticulously selected the correct species for each planting site, abiding by the highest environmental standards. The diverse species planted include mangroves, native trees, fruit-bearing trees, and coffee, each contributing uniquely to ecological protection and community development.

Driving change through key partnerships

Since 2018, GForest and WWF have planted 220,000 trees (including yakal, dungon, and narra) in the Ipo Watershed, reinforcing the Angat-Umiray-Ipo watersheds system that supplies roughly 96% of the water needs of Metro Manila.

In 2023, GForest and the ABS-CBN Foundation successfully cultivated 180 hectares of land with seedlings as part of the La Mesa Watershed project—resulting in 160,000 trees planted, including lipote, lago, malapapaya, and yakal.

GForest also launched collaborations with Philippine Coffee Board, Inc. (PCBI) and Friends of Hope, Inc. Through PCBI, native coffee tree seedlings were planted in Cavite and Benguet to support local livelihoods. The agroforestry program with Friends of Hope, Inc., meanwhile, benefits over 7,300 smallholder farmers and their families.

In Palawan, GForest and Culion Foundation, Inc. are focused on advancing environmental sustainability through restoration and education. Through their partnership, 325,000 mangroves have been planted in 15 barangays in Coron and Culion since 2022.

In Negros Oriental, GForest and Silliman University have been mobilizing a five-year joint project to mitigate the effects of climate change and support biodiversity. Since partnering in 2023, they have planted 180,000 mangroves and beach trees in the Negros region.

In 2024, GForest and RAFI celebrated the success of their four-year reforestation initiative in Cebu, having planted 800,000 mangroves that year alone and bringing the total number of trees planted through their partnership to 1,400,000.

Fostering thriving local communities

Community empowerment is another key component of GForest’s sustainability efforts. As all planting partners connect with local community groups and People’s Organizations (POs), livelihood opportunities are incorporated into each project. This is where local farmers and fisherfolk play an integral role in planting and maintaining seedlings, plants, and trees.

For many, this initiative provides an additional annual income of up to PHP 25,000, serving as a significant livelihood stream to support local communities. In addition, all proceeds from planting activities go directly to the farmers and fisherfolk involved, with no profit gained by the organizations. This advocacy model not only bolsters the financial independence of members of rural communities but also opens up new avenues of economic growth.

CJ Alegre shares, “At GCash, our goal is to continue harnessing tech for good to support this green cycle—through the way GForest enables our app users, how we engage our planting partners, and in the upliftment of the communities that contribute to the cause.”

Schneider Electric: 98% of PH Companies Have Sustainability Targets, 22% to Invest $1M+ in Sustainability in the Next 2 Years

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, announced findings from its annual Green Impact Gap survey. It underscores Asia Pacific’s sustainability journey. According to the survey, 98% of PH companies have established sustainability targets, 22% plan to invest at least USD 1M or more towards their sustainability agenda in the next 2 years. Additionally, the primary focus for this investment includes prioritizing digitalization as a key driver of their sustainability strategies.

Schneider Electric spoke to 4,500 leaders across nine countries to gather perspectives of business leaders in the Asia Pacific region. The markets include Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. The survey was conducted with the market research company, Milieu Insight.

Digitalisation at the Forefront of Sustainability Efforts in Asia

Digitalization is emerging as a critical component of Asian organizations' sustainability journeys. With 93% of companies currently leveraging digital tools, the survey found that technology is at the center of efforts to meet sustainability goals. The most common applications of digitalisation for sustainability are paperless operations (35%), followed by risk and opportunity management (33%) and supply chain digitisation (31%). For the Philippines, digitalization methods implemented include going paperless (42%) and limiting travel to/from office (39%).

“Digitalization is now becoming a priority for local businesses. While there are still challenges on our digital infrastructures that hinder digital inclusion and economic development, we are seeing significant shifts in terms of prioritization. Businesses now understand that digitalization will help drive operational resiliency and address achieve their sustainability agenda,” said Ireen Catane, Country President of Schneider Electric Philippines.

Sustainability: A Top Business Imperative

The survey also underscores the growing importance of sustainability in Asian companies, with 60% of business leaders now considering it a high priority. This is particularly strong in Thailand (83%), Vietnam (73%), and Indonesia (71%).

In the Philippines, while 98% have sustainability goals, only 52% of companies have implemented comprehensive sustainability strategies. Business leaders cite regulatory or economic uncertainty and internal company resourcing as key barriers to progress. When asked about their familiarity with the Philippines’ Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (RA 11285), results show that the local business leaders are only “very to moderately familiar” with the policy. Most business leaders also expressed that they are moderately confident (44%) in meeting the terms of the policy.

Despite progress, the survey also reveals a persistent ‘Green Impact Gap’ in Asia—a misalignment between regional companies' declared sustainability goals and the tangible actions taken to achieve them.

Navigating the Path to Net Zero

A notable difference between companies that have implemented sustainability strategies and other organizations lies in their commitment to supply chain sustainability. Nearly half (49%) of companies that have implemented strategies in Asia have identified supply chain sustainability as a key investment focus for the next two years, compared to around a third (34%) of other companies. This distinction translates into significantly higher rates of collaboration with suppliers to ensure sustainable sourcing practices and reduce environmental impact throughout the supply chain.

Survey results show that 41% of Asian firms that are implementing sustainability strategies plan to invest $1 million or more in the next two years, compared to 31% of other organizations. These efforts include navigating emerging standards and regulations.

The results also reveal that energy supply and demand volatility (56%) and fluctuating energy prices (51%) are the top energy risks for Philippine companies. In response, the companies are taking steps by adopting technologies such as energy/resource efficiency measures (49%) and digitalization of systems/operations (47%) to address these challenges and meet their energy goals.

“There is a substantial opportunity to accelerate progress and close the gap between ambition and action. This involves reassessing organizational priorities and strategically allocating resources to achieve resilience through digital transformation. We believe that sustainability drives business growth, value creation, and should be at the heart of every firm's business strategy,” Catane added.

PLDT, Smart Join Huawei and Government Partners To Protect Rainforests

MANILA, Philippines, April 2024 - The Philippines’ leading integrated telecommunications company PLDT Inc. (PLDT), and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) are working with Huawei Technologies Phils. Inc. (Huawei), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in deploying the technology of US-based non-profit organization Rainforest Connection (RFCx) to reinforce local forest conservation efforts and support enforcement of environmental laws.

Recognized as nature-based solutions for climate change, forests prevent carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere, generate clean air and water, and protect from erosion, landslides, and flooding. Forests are also home to various animal and plant species that make up biodiversity and keep the balance in the ecosystem.

“We need to protect and preserve our forests given their ecological importance. Unfortunately, we have been seeing continuous destruction of our forests over the years due to relentless cutting and deforestation activities. And among the many critical sites that need protection from these illegal activities is Palawan, as it is the only province in the country that has retained more than 50% of its original forest cover and is recognized as our last biodiversity frontier,” said Taytay, Palawan Community Environment and Natural Resource Office Forest Technician I, Quick Response Team Leader Voltaire Delos Angeles.

The shared common objective of addressing these and helping protect Philippine forests gave rise to a collaboration among PLDT, Smart, Huawei, DENR, DICT, and RFCx. Under this initial project, RFCx “Guardians”, which are bioacoustics monitoring devices, will be deployed in the protected forest areas of Taytay, Palawan. The Guardians can capture sounds of the forest, including those from chainsaws used for illegal logging and firing of gunshots.

Powered by solar energy, RFCx Guardians are installed high in canopies of trees and equipped with the capacity to capture sounds within a 3-kilometer radius. Collected data is transmitted via wireless technology to the cloud for analysis using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technology, allowing for the identification of possible illegal activities.

With the RCFx Guardians, and through a connected platform called “Arbimon”, forest rangers are able to monitor a wider area more efficiently which would otherwise be near impossible on foot given the size of the forest.  With access to analyzed data from the Guardians, the rangers have access to improved threat intelligence, allowing them to zero-in on specific areas and helping facilitate corresponding action to stop illegal activities in protected forests.

RFCx Guardian devices were previously installed in select forest areas of Palawan in 2020, contributing to the increase in apprehension and decrease in cases of illegal activities. Working in tandem with the DENR and the DICT, PLDT, Smart, and Huawei intend to expand the deployment of these devices in Palawan and in other protected forest areas in the country.

“PLDT and Smart recognize the vital role of our forests in combating climate change, in keeping our communities safe from disasters, and in enabling us to continue doing business in the long term. Together with our social outreach arm, the PLDT-Smart Foundation, we are proud to be part of this project that uses communications technology to support and reinforce critical efforts to preserve and protect forests in the country.  We are fortunate to have found like-minded partners in Huawei, the DICT, and the DENR who share our commitment to help protect the planet for the next generation,” said PLDT and Smart Chief Sustainability Officer Melissa Vergel de Dios.

“Aligning with Huawei’s TECH4ALL digital initiative and action plan, this project supports our efforts to innovate solutions, use technology, and work with partners to mitigate the impacts of climate change and be stewards of the Planet for the next generation,” said Huawei SR PR Manager Karrie Buenafe.

PLDT and Smart are continuously leveraging their industry and technology leadership to engage various stakeholders from industry, government, and civil society towards biodiversity conservation and no-deforestation initiatives. Aside from this project, PLDT and Smart have been working on biodiversity and nature-based climate solutions focused on mangroves, peatlands, and seagrasses.

The telcos also identify climate change as among their top enterprise risks and are thus embedding climate and nature into their network design, operational strategy, and customer solutions. As supporters of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, PLDT and Smart align with global standards in reporting climate risk management and environmental protection efforts.

These initiatives aim to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs,) particularly UN SDGs 13 on Climate Action, 14 on Life on Land, and 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.

Schneider Electric Reveals 99% of Filipino Companies Have Established Sustainability Goals, Recommends Digitalization for Profitability and to Cut Carbon Emissions

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Schneider Electric, a global leader in energy management and digital automation, unveils findings from its annual Sustainability Survey, which was conducted with the global research firm, Millieu Insight.

Results show that 60% of APAC’s business leaders feel that their company and country view sustainability as a ‘high priority’. In terms of the industry’s perception of digital transformation, 94% of business leaders agree that electrification is key to their corporate sustainability strategy. In the Philippines, 99% of our local business leaders have established goals to achieve Net Zero in their operations.

The survey engaged 4,500 C-level to Middle-level business leaders across nine countries in Southeast and East Asia, including the Philippines. The objective is to gauge sentiments and actions on sustainability within APAC and the local business community.

“We are seeing a growing trajectory towards greater sustainability integration into our local industries’ operations. As a leader in sustainable energy management solutions, Schneider Electric is reaffirming its commitment to support the business industry and the government in their pursuit towards their shift to green energy,” said Ireen Catane, Country President of Schneider Electric Philippines.

Intention vs. Action: The Green Action Gap

The Green Action Gap, a Schneider Electric identified metric used to estimate the rift between the organizations' declared commitment towards their sustainability goals and the tangible actions to implement sustainable development by companies. It reveals that while 99% of the surveyed leaders have established sustainability plans, only 58% have set their plans in action. The reasons captured include: poor incentives, regulations uncertainty, bureaucratic challenges, market data references insufficiencies, and lack of business priority. While challenges persist, this gap serves as a rallying call for urgent efforts to bridge intentions with actions.

Across the region, the top reasons reported for pursuing corporate sustainability were innovation and competitiveness (39%) and an increase in business opportunities (37%) with countries in Southeast Asia most likely to agree that sustainability contributes to business growth. Risk management, reputation, and opportunity for cost-saving round out the top five motivating factors companies consider when making decisions around sustainability strategy.

Most business leaders across the region (82% on average) believe that providing more incentives is more effective than enforcing penalties to encourage private sector compliance with government sustainability goals.

“We are encouraged by the growing awareness and commitment among Asia's companies to establish sustainability goals. However, the survey's findings on the intention-action gap reveal that there is still work to be done. As we navigate the urgent need for sustainability, it becomes more crucial for businesses and the public sector to collaborate and leverage innovative solutions to create a more sustainable future,” Catane emphasized.

Electricity 4.0: Path to Net Zero

To be on track for a net zero world in 2050, businesses need to reduce emissions by 50% this decade. At the recently concluded Philenergy Expo 2024, Schneider Electric introduced its global vision, Electricity 4.0, which shows how digitalization is the key to mitigate climate and energy crises.

From the survey report, results show that 97% of Philippine companies agree/strongly agree that digitalization is a key sustainability driver. The same number also consider energy efficiency as a core aspect of their sustainability plan.

“Electricity is the cleanest and most visible form of energy. By building a smart electric world where everything is interconnected, people will have the ability to optimize safety, reliability, performance, and lifespan. All while working towards achieving our global carbon neutrality goal by 2050,” says Catane.

Schneider Electric offers a range of cutting-edge integrated solutions tailored to help businesses in the Philippines digitize, decarbonize, and strategize.

The company’s proprietary EcoStruxure solution combines hardware and software to connect an enterprise, from the shop floor to the top. This enables users to track and make iterations on their operations in real-time allowing for optimized operations and reduced energy consumption.

“With digitization, energy shifts from being the biggest driver of carbon emissions to the biggest opportunity for carbon reduction. We have the tools that we need to drive change. All we need to do is to work together to make that happen,” Catane added.

Globe completes pilot run of hybrid solar power in 26 sites, paves way for greener network operations

Leading digital solutions platform Globe has successfully completed its innovative pilot program featuring hybrid solar power, marking a major step forward in greener network operations. This milestone aligns with the company’s firm commitment to sustainability and its goal to achieve Net Zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions by 2050.

The program, which ran from 2022 to 2023, focused on integrating hybrid solar power across 26 diverse Globe sites – three in the National Capital Region (NCR), 17 in South Luzon, and six in Mindanao.

The sites include off-grid towers traditionally dependent on diesel gensets but can be fully powered either solely by renewable energy with battery energy storage system or a combination of renewables and diesel fuel. The technology was also tested in bad-grid tower sites experiencing frequent power outages and in good-grid tower sites that utilize a mix of coal and renewable energy sources from the power grid.

Results of the initiative have been remarkable, with Globe saving an estimated of over 119,000 liters of diesel fuel and avoiding over 67,000 kWh of electricity consumption, equating to approximately PHP6.9M in savings. These figures not only highlight the program's effectiveness in reducing environmental impact but also underscore the potential for cost savings and efficiency improvements in sustainable energy solutions.

Joel Agustin, Globe Network Planning and Engineering Head, commented, "Successfully implementing hybrid solar power across multiple sites represents a big leap in our efforts to decarbonize our operations. Beyond demonstrating our dedication to environmental stewardship, it also cements Globe’s status as the Most Sustainability-Driven Network Operator in the Philippines."

Traditionally, Globe’s cell sites have relied on electricity from the national power grid, a significant portion of which comes from coal, and conventional diesel gensets for backup power. However, the shift to sustainable sources became imperative, especially for sites without commercial power-grid connectivity or with unreliable grid conditions. They typically relied on traditional gensets operating continuously.

Globe's hybrid solar power solution incorporates several innovative features. It includes a Solar Mini-Grid that can be built within the facility or adjacent area, offering scalable capacity and adaptability. This system provides direct power to on-site equipment, making it ideal for deployment in challenging terrains.

The solution also includes an Advanced Solar Hybrid solution, an intelligent off-grid alternative power system that primarily uses solar energy, switching to the rectifier battery system and diesel genset as needed.

Encouraged by the promising results, Globe is set to progressively deploy its hybrid solar power technology across its cell sites. The company is actively pursuing green solutions and innovations that will reduce its network’s GHG and overall carbon footprint. This approach reflects Globe's deep-rooted commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible corporate citizenship.
