Building a Digital Future: GCash Celebrates 7th Bangsamoro Foundation Day With a Push Towards Inclusive, Cashless Communities

In support of the commitment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to promote inclusive and people-centered progress, GCash, the country’s leading finance app, took part in the 7th Bangsamoro Foundation Day by working alongside the Bangsamoro Government to deliver initiatives focused on digital inclusion, financial literacy, and community empowerment.

Recognizing that limited access to banking infrastructure remains a barrier to economic participation in many Bangsamoro communities, GCash partnered with the Ministry of Human Settlements and Development (MHSD) and the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) to bring practical, entry-level digital financial tools closer to citizens. Through these collaborations, the initiative aimed to reach households, beneficiaries, and communities that are often underserved or excluded from the formal financial system.

To help more Bangsamoro residents join the formal financial system, GCash also provided easier access to the GCash Visa Card. This lets users use their digital wallet for everyday purchases, even in places that still require a card. With more ways to pay safely and conveniently, users can participate more actively in the local economy and the shift toward digital payments.

Complementing access, GCash emphasized financial capability and protection through guided demonstrations and financial literacy sessions. Participants were introduced to practical digital wallet use cases relevant to daily life, such as remittances, bill payments, and essential purchases. Residents also took part in financial literacy sessions that focused on cybersecurity, fraud awareness, and responsible digital behavior. These sessions aimed to ensure that adoption of digital finance is safe, informed, and sustainable, particularly for first-time users, PWDs, children, and senior citizens.

“Financial inclusion is more than about access to tools; it is about enabling people to participate fully in the economy and in society,” said CJ Alegre, Head of Sustainability at Mynt, parent company of GCash.

“By working closely with the Bangsamoro Government and engaging communities on the ground, we help ensure that digital finance becomes a practical, safe, and empowering resource for everyday life. When more people are connected to the formal financial system, entire regions benefit through greater economic activity, resilience, and opportunity,” he added.

The participation of GCash in the Bangsamoro Foundation Day reflects its broader strategy to deepen presence in BARMM by combining access, education, and partnerships. By engaging directly with communities and local government stakeholders, the initiative contributed to building trust in digital financial services and supporting the region’s transition toward a more inclusive and resilient digital economy.

Through sustained on-ground engagement and collaboration with regional partners, GCash continues to advance digital inclusion nationwide, helping ensure that communities in BARMM are not left behind as the country moves toward a cash-lite, digitally empowered future.

Security Bank Advances Sustainable Development Across the Philippines in 2025

In line with its mission to enrich lives, empower businesses, and build communities sustainably, Security Bank intensified its corporate social responsibility initiatives in 2025, delivering meaningful programs that created lasting impact across the Philippines. Through a strong focus on livelihood development, education, disaster response, culture, and environmental protection, the bank demonstrated its commitment to inclusive and sustainable growth.

Strengthening livelihoods remained a cornerstone of Security Bank’s community development efforts. In Aklan, the bank provided cacao seedlings to 40 local farmers, helping them diversify income sources and build long-term agricultural sustainability. Beyond material support, Security Bank also mentored 980 families nationwide, equipping them with financial literacy, entrepreneurial skills, and practical guidance to improve household resilience and economic stability. These initiatives directly contributed to empowering grassroots communities and supporting micro-level economic growth.

Security Bank also played a vital role in disaster response and recovery. In 2025, the bank extended aid to 661 families affected by natural disasters, providing timely assistance to help them rebuild and recover. This proactive approach underscored the institution’s commitment to standing with communities during times of crisis and ensuring that recovery efforts are both compassionate and sustainable.

Education continued to be a major priority for Security Bank. The institution donated a total of 901 classrooms to 153 public schools across the country, significantly improving learning environments for thousands of students. Complementing infrastructure support, Security Bank also provided free eye care services to 1,170 students, addressing a critical yet often overlooked barrier to effective learning. These education initiatives reinforced the bank’s belief that access to quality education is fundamental to long-term national development.

Beyond economic and educational programs, Security Bank actively supported culture and environmental sustainability. Cultural engagement programs reached more than 300 artists, helping preserve local heritage while fostering creative expression. On the environmental front, the bank planted 940 mangrove seedlings as part of a broader goal to plant 10,000 seedlings, contributing to coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.

Through these comprehensive initiatives in 2025, Security Bank strengthened institutions, expanded opportunities, and built stronger, more resilient communities. By aligning business purpose with social and environmental responsibility, the bank continues to play a meaningful role in driving sustainable development across the Philippines.

Sari-Sari Stores Using AI See 46% Sales Jump - Packworks Report

Manila, Philippines — Artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to reshape how local sari-sari stores operate, helping small retailers make smarter decisions and improve profitability through practical, data-driven insights.

New findings from tech startup Packworks.io show that AI is no longer a distant concept for microenterprises but is becoming a tool that directly supports day-to-day store management and sales performance for neighborhood stores.

Packworks analyzed more than 300 stores in its network over a two-week period following data collection in September 2025 and recorded a 46% increase in daily gross merchandise value (GMV). This increase highlights substantial gains in overall store efficiency, resulting in a 17% rise in total sales for stores during the same period.

Packworks also found that stores that applied AI-driven recommendations earned higher revenue despite operating on 20% fewer active selling days—dropping from five to four days over two weeks. This indicates how AI can guide store owners in managing inventory, improving product mix, and planning demand more efficiently, enabling owners to maximize sales during their operating hours.

The insights come from Packworks’ analysis of sari-sari stores that accessed its Store Insighting Project (SIP) document, a personalized report that turns each store’s transaction history into actionable recommendations powered by AI. By reviewing pre- and post-performance across stores, Packworks quantified the impact of engaging with the SIP document on business outcomes for its partner stores. The analysis also showed that the increase in sales was driven by underperforming products identified by the AI tool, giving store owners insight into which stock to move to maintain operational efficiency.

Packworks’ AI-powered precision marketing tool was developed with DOST-PCIEERD’s Startup Grant Fund (SGF) Program, awarded in 2024 to support wider AI adoption in the country’s micro-retail sector. The company also partnered with ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (Philippines) (STT GDC Philippines) to access its AI Synergy Lab to run large-scale machine learning models, and with Ateneo’s Business Insights Laboratory for Development (BUILD) to build a comprehensive data warehouse and business intelligence tools.

"Even at this early stage of adoption, we've recorded increased sales and enhanced operational efficiency from stores by using the AI tools we've developed with support from DOST and through our collaborations with STT GDC and Ateneo BUILD. As stores learn to leverage the recommendations from the AI-driven insights they can access through SIP, microretailers can make smarter decisions that translate into higher sales and more efficient operations," Packworks Chief Data Officer Andoy Montiel said.

Packworks' latest innovation aims to complement the government's efforts in helping micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) adopt AI. While AI adoption could unlock PHP 2.8 trillion economic benefits by 2030 across sectors, a report by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) shows that only 14.9% of local businesses currently use AI tools. This wide gap, despite widespread computer ownership and internet access, indicates a slow rate of adoption and highlights the need for accessible solutions.

"Our mission at Packworks is to close the gap by making AI practical, accessible, and useful for the smallest retailers. Our latest innovation highlights the immense potential of how technology, especially AI, and strategic partnerships can drive sustainable growth for neighborhood stores across the Philippines," Packworks Co-Founder Hubert Yap said.

Packworks’ mission to bring AI into micro retail stores aligns with the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, which recognizes the role of digital transformation and emerging technologies like AI in increasing efficiency and revitalizing industries and services.

Restoring Dignity in Borrowing: Fuse Financing on Breaking Credit Barriers for Small Businesses at AgriVerse 2025

Fuse Financing, Inc., the lending arm of GCash, led a discussion on fair borrowing options for Filipino micro-retailers and agri-entrepreneurs at the recently concluded Agriverse Summit 2025 held in Pasay City. The event brought together agripreneurs, government officials, innovators, and small business owners to explore how technology can support business growth, boost agricultural productivity, and promote sustainable farming.
Organized by the Asia Small Business Federation (ASBF) and the Philippine Association of Stores and Cardinderia Owners (PASCO), Fuse Financing's chief product officer and strategy head, Baby Aquino, highlighted the company's commitment to restoring dignity and fairness to borrowing for the Filipino micro-retail and agricultural sector.

In a fireside chat, "Digital Wallets, Local Markets: Unlocking Growth for Micro-Retail and Agribusiness," Aquino also shared how Fuse is redefining access to finance through digital technology. The company replaces exploitative informal lending with fast, fair, and transparent credit products that can be accessed in real time, anytime, anywhere, through a mobile phone via your GCash e-wallet.

Fuse’s innovation lies in its end-to-end digital process. By using data-driven credit assessment and digital collection tools, the lender removes the need for physical documents or in-person applications. This allows MSMEs to access funds within minutes, validating what Aquino describes as "true empowerment."

As of the second quarter of 2025, Fuse has extended credit to 9.5 million Filipinos and disbursed P287 billion in loans. Fuse can extend credit to segments underserved by traditional institutions, such as MSMEs and women, with one in three being small business owners, and three in five borrowers are women while four out of five are from the masses (SEC C2DE), underscoring the company’s wide reach and deep impact on inclusion.

The lender’s suite of products is designed to meet the different financing needs of small entrepreneurs. GLoan offers larger cash loans for business owners of up to P350,000, to support their business capital and growth, while GLoan Sakto, a sachet-type loan, enables eligible customers to borrow for as low as Php 100- an ideal option for the regular customers or the “sukis” of sari-sari stores, instead of them constantly borrowing from sari-sari store owners. This also relieves them of the hassle of collecting those small loan owners. Often used as “pambale,” borrowing as small as P100 can give customers who were traditionally sidelined by formal credit institutions an opportunity to build a formal credit history. This approach helps everyday Filipinos transition from informal borrowing toward long-term, sustainable growth.

Aquino emphasized that Fuse’s mission is to make formal lending accessible to every Filipino entrepreneur. "’Yung philosophy kasi talaga ng GCash is to allow Filipinos to borrow with dignity. Dapat ‘yong mga produkto namin ay klaro, fair, and transparent. (GCash operates on a philosophy that aims to allow Filipinos to borrow with dignity. Our products are clear, fair, [and] transparent),” she said.

Aquino concluded that the future of small businesses in the Philippines, especially in the agri-tech sector, depends on three essentials: access to finance, access to markets, and access to technology. Through digital innovation, Fuse and GCash aim to make these opportunities available to every Filipino entrepreneur.

Philippine Companies Double Down on Sustainability to Drive Growth Amid Economic Uncertainty: Schneider Electric

MANILA, PHILIPPINES Schneider Electric, a global energy technology leader, today announced the results of its annual Green Impact Gap survey, revealing that Philippine business leaders increasingly view sustainability as a driver of growth and competitiveness, even as they cite economic uncertainty and geopolitical instability as barriers to further sustainability investment.

Ninety-seven percent of companies have established sustainability targets. Among them, 58% report that sustainability reporting has become easier over the past year, largely due to technology advancements. Yet, 32% still face challenges, citing factors such as rising costs.

This year, 55% of company leaders identify innovation and competitiveness as key drivers of sustainability, with the strongest emphasis from the semiconductors (71%) and data centers (60%) sectors, followed by real estate (53%) and healthcare (52%). This underscores how industries increasingly link sustainability with business innovation.

Sustainability is also delivering tangible business value. This year, 52% of leaders say it creates new business opportunities, up from 42% in 2024. Similarly, 42% pursue sustainability to strengthen brand and reputation, compared with 32% last year, while 46% cite cost savings and financial benefits, up from 43%. These year-on-year gains demonstrate that sustainability has evolved from a peripheral initiative into a core strategy for competitiveness and resilience.

While findings underscore the growing commitment to sustainability in the Philippines, they also reveal a persistent ‘Green Impact Gap’ — the misalignment between companies' declared sustainability goals and the tangible actions taken to achieve them. This year, 97% of companies set targets, but less than half are taking comprehensive action, keeping the regional Green Impact Gap at 46%.

With 2025 marking a critical milestone on the path to 2030 climate goals, companies remain optimistic. Around 84% express confidence in meeting or exceeding their 2030 targets, while 20% report being more than three years ahead of schedule.

“Companies across the Philippines are not just weathering the storm—they’re using sustainability as a compass to navigate it,” said Ireen Catane, Country President, Schneider Electric Philippines. “Despite volatile economic conditions, early movers and adopters are turning to digitalization and AI to drive efficiency, mitigate risk, and create lasting value.”

In parallel, two-thirds of companies (66%) report being very or moderately familiar with Republic Act 11285, the Philippines' Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act. Among these, 85% express moderate to high confidence in meeting its requirements, signaling readiness to implement concrete energy-efficiency measures. This trend aligns with the DOE's national efforts to promote energy efficiency, supporting businesses and local governments in optimizing energy use while advancing sustainability goals.

AI unlocks cost savings and energy efficiency

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is helping companies address financial and energy risks. 92% of companies in the Philippines this year are already applying or are interested in applying AI to advance their sustainability ambitions. At 59%, AI for energy consumption optimization now tops the list of energy and resource efficiency applications, surpassing waste management (50%) and smart building management and automation (49%).

Companies see AI’s biggest impact on sustainability in automating data collection and reporting (51%), optimizing energy use (44%), and enhancing product design (44%). By improving energy efficiency, AI helps mitigate cost risks, aligning with the 46% of company leaders who cite financial benefits and savings as key drivers for sustainability amid persistent energy price concerns.

With the rise of energy demand in the Philippines, which the Department of Energy (DOE) projects will grow 4–5% annually and potentially double total power consumption by 2040 under the Philippine Energy Plan, companies continued to adjust their decarbonization strategies in 2025. The most widely adopted measures were switching to low-carbon or electric vehicles for transport (27%, up from 25%), and investing in research and development to drive innovation in low-carbon technologies (27%, up from 25%).

From 2024 to 2025, companies advanced in cutting Scope 2 emissions—indirect emissions from purchased energy such as electricity, steam, heating, and cooling—through onsite renewables (34%, up from 29%) and energy-efficient equipment (41%, unchanged). They also adopted emerging measures like Green IT plans (31%). Efforts to reduce Scope 3, or value chain, emissions also grew, with gains in supply chain optimization (33%, up from 29%) and in promoting remote work and video conferencing to cut commuting and travel-related emissions (31%, up from 30%).

Investments hold steady despite economic uncertainty

With business leaders seeing the bottom-line benefit of sustainability, planned investment in sustainability transformation has held steady, with 23% of companies planning to invest at least $US1 million over the next two years.

While investment in sustainability continues to face key limiters, most have eased slightly year-on-year. Economic uncertainty remains the top concern, but dropped from 49% in 2024 to 45% in 2025.

Internal budgetary constraints show a sharper decline, from 48% to 37%, while regulatory and policy difficulties (37% to 35%) and poor incentives (36% to 35%) also decreased marginally. These shifts suggest that, while structural and financial challenges remain, the investment landscape in 2025 is relatively more favorable for corporate sustainability than the previous year.

Now in its third year, the Schneider Electric Green Impact Gap survey, conducted with Milieu Insight, gathers insights from 4,500 middle- to senior-level executives across nine Asian markets—Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam—on how businesses are prioritizing and investing in sustainability through a 30-question assessment.

Security Bank Foundation Builds Hope With New Classrooms in Gapan City

Gapan City, Nueva Ecija – Security Bank Foundation, Inc. (SBFI) turned over a newly constructed two-storey, six-classroom school building to Gapan East Integrated School (GEIS) in Nueva Ecija, marking another milestone in its flagship program “Build a School, Build a Nation: The Classrooms Project.”

The donation helps ease GEIS’s classroom shortage, giving over 1,200 students and teachers a more conducive space to learn, grow, and dream. Despite limited resources, GEIS has consistently excelled—scoring above the national average in problem-solving, information literacy, and critical thinking during the 2023–2024 National Achievement Test, even outperforming more than 90% of Metro Manila schools.

“Some of us may feel that the task of addressing the problems of education in our country is so overwhelming that the efforts we are exerting would hardly make a difference. But I do not agree because I believe in the power of persistent cumulative influence.”, said SBFI Chairman Rafael F. Simpao, Jr.

Dr. Enrique E. Angeles, Jr., CESO VI, Schools Division Superintendent of Gapan City, adding that the new building symbolizes the shared hope and commitment to education of the city and Security Bank Foundation.

Beyond classrooms, Security Bank Foundation also invests in educator development through partnerships such as with Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle Philippines, offering programs such as the Principals’ Training Program. One former GEIS Assistant Principal—now leading Lupang Pangarap Elementary School—is currently enrolled in this initiative.

To date, SBFI has donated 851 classrooms to 146 schools across 87 cities and municipalities nationwide—each one a testament to its belief that nation-building begins with a single classroom.

SHDA Pushes for Recalibrated, People-Centered, and Inclusive Housing Strategies at the 33rd National Developers Convention

Manila, Philippines – As the Philippines observed the National Shelter Month in October, the Subdivision and Housing Developers Association (SHDA) advanced a recalibrated, people-centered approach to housing, supported the expansion of the Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Program (4PH), and adopted convention resolutions during the 33rd SHDA National Developers Convention held on October 9–10, 2025, at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. Themed “Recalibrate: Upgrading Housing Strategies for a Better Tomorrow,” the event underscored the private sector’s crucial role in creating inclusive and sustainable communities in partnership with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD).

The two-day convention gathered over 400 key stakeholders, from the government sector, real estate developers, financial institutions, and policy experts, to refine strategies for delivering affordable, inclusive, and resilient homes under the 4PH program. Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) Vice President Dr. Marife Ballesteros shared insights on demographic shifts and housing trends. At the same time, Pag-IBIG Fund CEO Ms. Marilene Acosta provided updates on financing and programs that directly support 4PH’s nationwide rollout.

SHDA National President Engr. Francis Richmond Villegas emphasized that collaborative reforms are key to achieving the administration’s housing goals. “Through the 4PH program, we see unprecedented opportunities for developers to help deliver more homes, more efficiently, and with greater social impact,” he shared.

SHDA 2025 National Convention Chairperson Ms. Renelyn Tan-Castillejos highlighted the importance of synergy and of bringing together key stakeholders to address the country's housing needs. “The role that the real estate sector plays in nation building is vital not only through the construction of homes but more importantly in the creation of safe and livable communities using sustainable technologies,” she said.

The panel discussions centered on policy reforms aligned with DHSUD’s 8-Point Housing Agenda, particularly advancing the government’s flagship 4PH initiative, highlighting the importance of community when building housing developments, and integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in development projects.
The government echoed the call for stronger collaboration. In her keynote message, DHSUD Senior Undersecretary Atty. Sharon Faith Paquiz emphasized, “Collaboration allows us to continuously enhance our programs and initiatives for the Philippine housing sector. Moving forward, let us inspire more partnerships, with the public and private sectors working hand in hand to build a future where every Filipino has access to safe, affordable, and resilient housing through our united efforts.”

Among the highlights of this year’s convention were the panel on women leaders in real estate and the pivotal role of developers in advancing the ESG agenda. Speakers and panelists emphasized that people-centered and inclusive leadership is essential to driving transformation in the housing sector, from policymaking to on-the-ground development practices. As the housing sector embraces global best practices, SHDA urged the industry to strengthen collaboration in building climate-resilient, livable, and inclusive communities. Discussions also explored how ESG integration could drive long-term value creation while balancing sustainability and affordability for Filipino homebuyers.

The convention also reaffirmed SHDA’s policy priorities under its “Essential Few” agenda, which continues to guide the association’s housing reform advocacy. These priorities include the expansion of the 4PH program, calling for the continued rollout of the administration’s flagship housing initiative through stronger public-private collaboration; streamlined permits and one-stop shops to digitalize and simplify permitting processes; and institutionalized housing incentives that encourage more developers to participate in affordable housing production. These priorities aim to modernize systems, lower costs, and accelerate housing delivery, ensuring that more Filipino families can access affordable and sustainable homes.

The convention also emphasized the power of cross-industry partnerships to reduce production costs, unlock financing innovation, and improve housing accessibility. To further drive housing innovation, SHDA underscored that private developers play a vital role in aligning national goals with practical, scalable, and community-based solutions that meet the evolving needs of Filipino families.

In his message, SHDA National Chairman Ar. Leonardo Dayao Jr. highlighted the importance of fostering empathy and sustainability in policy direction. “Our focus on people-centered development ensures that housing reform is not only about infrastructure but also about building communities that uplift the quality of life,” he said.

SHDA Corporate Secretary Atty. Marianne Lina-Cruz underscored the role of the convention resolutions in reinforcing private-public synergy, saying, “These resolutions reflect the shared vision of government and industry partners to make sustainable housing accessible to every Filipino family.”

GCash Highlights Role of National ID in Enabling Inclusive, Secure Finance at BSP Forum

A trusted digital identity system lays the foundation for true financial inclusion, helping ensure that every Filipino, regardless of their background or circumstances, can access essential financial services with confidence.

This was the central message at the recent Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Forum on Digital Identity, where GCash, the country's leading finance finance super app and largest cashless ecosystem, shared how its integration with the National ID eVerify Authentication Service (NIDAS) is making identity verification easier, more accessible, and more inclusive to help more Filipinos, especially those with limited access to traditional IDs, open an account.

Held at the BSP Assembly Hall, the forum brought together leaders from government, financial institutions, and the tech sector to examine how digital identity can support more secure and inclusive financial systems. Guided by the theme “Building Trust and Synergy in Digital Identity for an Inclusive and Secure Financial System,” the discussions emphasized the need for collaboration, innovation, and user-centric solutions that address real-world access challenges.

Representing GCash was Joanne Avendaño, vice president and head of customer experience management, who shared the company’s experience as the first and only Electronic Money Issuer integrated with NIDAS. This enables GCash users to validate their identity using their National ID in real-time, eliminating the need for multiple traditional IDs, which many Filipinos today still lack. This approach has helped reduce drop-offs during onboarding and has improved the success rate of account creation, especially among underserved groups. Most importantly, it has helped streamline onboarding for a broader range of users.

“Our partnership with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has always been more than just ID acceptance. It’s a shared commitment to make sure that no Filipino is left behind in the digital economy,” said Avendaño. “By enabling real-time National ID validation and bringing services on-ground, we’re helping more Filipinos complete their verification journey with ease and confidence,” Avendaño added.

The forum also featured insights from the National Privacy Commission, World Bank, Korea Credit Information Services, and several units within the BSP. Topics ranged from data governance and consumer protection to practical implementation challenges and international benchmarks.

Avendaño joined fellow panelists from Asia United Bank, Seabank Philippines, Maya Philippines, and the Bankers Association of the Philippines in discussing the value of coordinated efforts, shared learnings, and responsible use of digital identity systems in strengthening public trust.

Beyond app integration, GCash has also worked with the PSA and local government units (LGUs) to support on-ground National ID registration and account onboarding events, which were held in schools, barangays, and underserved communities across the country. This approach brings both digital identity and financial access closer to Filipinos who need it most.

With digital ID adoption gaining momentum, GCash’s role as an early adopter highlights the importance of responsible integration, cross-sector collaboration, and community engagement in building a more accessible and inclusive financial ecosystem.

Globe Backs DICT’s Digital Bayanihan in Tawi-Tawi With Continued Investments in Connectivity and Inclusion

Globe reaffirmed its role as a committed government partner in promoting digital inclusion and sustainable connectivity during the Digital Bayanihan Tawi-Tawi leg, led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

Digital Bayanihan highlighted a shared goal between the public and private sectors to expand digital access in far-flung areas, where connectivity serves as a gateway to education, livelihood, and vital public services.

Globe’s participation demonstrated its support for the national digitalization agenda through sustained investments in infrastructure and digital tools that close connectivity gaps and enhance daily life in underserved communities.

“Globe is proud to stand beside the national government in realizing the dream of a digitally empowered Philippines. Our work in Mindanao, especially in areas like Tawi-Tawi, reflects our belief that no one should be left behind in the digital age,” said Robert Aquino, Assistant Vice President for Government Relations at Globe, during the event.

In line with this vision, Globe has built and upgraded around 2,000 cell sites across Mindanao in 2024 and continues to expand its fiber footprint to deliver reliable mobile and broadband connectivity where it is needed most.

Globe pairs its infrastructure efforts with community‑focused initiatives that drive digital empowerment. Partnering with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the company provided nearly 500 mobile phones to 4Ps beneficiaries, enabling them to receive government aid via GCash and improve their quality of life.

“Connectivity is a human right. Through stronger infrastructure and community programs, we help Filipinos access opportunities, public services, and economic mobility,” added Aquino..

Globe also encourages the responsible and purposeful use of the internet, guiding communities to harness connectivity for personal and collective development by using digital tools to build resilience and uplift local economies.

With the President in attendance, the event gathered leaders including DICT Secretary Henry Aguda, National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez, Tawi-Tawi Governor Yshmael Sali, Bongao Mayor Jimuel Que, and Mindanao State University – Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO) Chancellor Dr. Mary Joyce Gunto-Salih.

Globe’s active involvement in Digital Bayanihan reinforces its long-term alignment with the government’s universal connectivity goals, rolling out infrastructure to expand access in remote areas like Tawi-Tawi and help build a digitally inclusive Philippines.

SHDA Urges Targeted Housing Policy Reforms Amid Changing Filipino Household Trends

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – The Subdivision and Housing Developers Association (SHDA), the country’s foremost industry association of housing and real estate stakeholders, is calling for data-informed, people-centered housing strategies that align with the Philippines’ evolving demographic and socio-economic realities.

SHDA issued the call after citing findings from a recent policy dialogue organized by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), titled “Rethinking Policies for Inclusive Living: Demographic Shifts and Housing Trends.”

During the event, SHDA Executive Director Mr. Sonny Ducay drew attention to a study conducted by PIDS researchers MM Ballesteros, JA Ancheta, and TP Ramos, which examined shifting household structures in the country. The study revealed a significant rise in non-nuclear households, with nearly a third of Filipinos now living in extended, multifamily, or single-person household arrangements. Noteworthy is that one-person households are steadily increasing, a trend driven by urban migration, an aging population, and changing family dynamics.

“To meet the real and evolving needs of Filipino households, housing programs must go beyond a one-size-fits-all approach,” said Mr. Ducay. “We propose a segmented policy framework that tailors interventions to the distinct realities of single-person households, elderly residents, and extended families, ensuring each demographic is supported with appropriate, accessible, and sustainable housing solutions.”

To address these shifts, Mr. Ducay presented a menu of policy options for housing based on four distinct household financing scenarios: those with no access to housing finance, those who have access but lack affordability, those who require subsidies, and those who can afford and access housing. This framework reinforces the need for differentiated and sustainable housing interventions that reflect the real capacities and contexts of Filipino households.

SHDA supports the development of targeted housing solutions grounded in actual demographic patterns. For single-person households and young professionals, this involves affordable rentals and compact units located near urban centers, along with innovative financing mechanisms such as co-borrowing among peers or partners. For extended and multifamily households, SHDA advocates shared-living models and the strategic reuse of idle housing stock, including foreclosed government-owned properties and underutilized buildings, such as former POGO facilities.

For elderly individuals and persons with disabilities, SHDA recommends the creation of retirement-friendly developments that comply with BP 344 accessibility standards (An Act to Enhance Mobility of Disabled Persons by Requiring Certain Buildings, Institutions, Establishments, and Public Utilities to Install Facilities and Other Devices) and support aging in place through proximity to medical services and community care. Urban migrant workers, meanwhile, would benefit from rental housing developments situated near major employment hubs, integrated with transportation networks, essential services, and livelihood support. In response to the rise of remote and digital-era workers, SHDA also promotes the development of digitally connected communities designed to support emerging work and lifestyle models.

In addition to proposing differentiated housing models, SHDA urges stronger collaboration between national government agencies, local government units, the private sector, and civil society. This multi-sectoral approach is essential to planning and implementing inclusive housing strategies that address both current realities and future needs.

“Housing development must not only keep pace with demographic change, it must lead the way,” Mr. Ducay stated. “We must move beyond building more homes to building the right homes for the right people at the right time.”

Championing DEI and Grassroots Innovation at the 2025 CSR Expo

The 2025 CSR Expo was a celebration of purpose-driven leadership, inclusive development, and impactful innovation. Spearheaded by the League of Corporate Foundations (LCF), this year’s conference brought together change-makers from both the public and private sectors, highlighting how collaborative efforts can drive sustainable nation-building.

Senator Risa Hontiveros, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality, underscored the critical role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in building a more just and empowered society. As a long-time advocate of gender rights and social justice, Senator Hontiveros emphasized that inclusive practices must be at the core of policymaking, development programs, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Echoing this message, Shem Jose Garcia, Chairperson of LCF and Executive Director of Vivant Foundation, Inc., stressed the importance of acknowledging how overlapping identities—such as gender, income, ethnicity, and ability—shape individuals' access to opportunities. His call to action highlighted the need for nuanced, intersectional approaches to CSR that go beyond surface-level diversity and directly address systemic barriers faced by vulnerable communities.

One powerful example of inclusive innovation was the LIFE Program’s BLT Community Kitchen in Basilan, which stood out among the featured initiatives. The kitchen serves Muslim-friendly, nutritious meals to underserved communities, showcasing how culturally sensitive solutions can meet both practical and social needs. Beyond food security, the initiative promotes community participation, dignity, and empowerment—core values of DEI in action.

The Expo also spotlighted grassroots innovations through interactive booths and immersive experiences hosted by LCF member foundations and partners. These displays brought to life impactful programs in education, health, the environment, and disaster resilience, demonstrating how community-based solutions can scale when backed by committed organizations.

A key highlight of the Expo was the CSR Guild Awards, which recognized outstanding initiatives across a range of categories.

Among the awardees:

  • Ayala Foundation, Inc. (Enterprise Development) was honored for the Iraya Mangyan Weaving Program, which uplifts indigenous artisans and preserves cultural heritage.

  • Vivant Foundation, Inc. (Education) received recognition for Project Liadlaw, which brings solar energy to off-grid schools, enhancing access to education.

  • Aboitiz Foundation, in partnership with the Hecdor Group (Arts and Culture), was lauded for Project Tahi 'Ta, an initiative that revives traditional Filipino textiles.

The CSR Medal of Recognition also spotlighted outstanding contributions from non-member organizations:

  • Pioneer Adhesives Foundation, Inc. (Disaster Resilience) for ASTIG, a program merging art and disaster readiness.

  • Fluor Daniel Inc., Philippines (Environment) for their mangrove reforestation and coastal cleanups under Commitment to Sustainability.

  • Juanito I. King Foundation, Inc. (Health) for Project Healthy Smile, offering dental care to underserved schoolchildren.

The CSR Guild Awards continue to serve as a powerful reminder that strategic, inclusive, and values-driven CSR can uplift entire communities and redefine the role of business in society. This year’s Expo affirmed that when equity meets innovation, real transformation happens at the grassroots.
